Vanserum combines a nature reserve in Mittlandet with a waterscape and traces of cultural history. The Mittlandsleden runs through the Vanserum-Bäck Nature Reserve; other highlights include finds at springs, a complex of house foundations and the Malm settlement. For planning your trip, you can group the themes according to your interests: nature and the trail form one focus, while archaeological finds and settlement history form another. This lets you decide whether you would like to discover Vanserum primarily through its landscape, its history or both perspectives.

Watercourses and Wetlands

The Vanserum-Bäck Nature Reserve is located in Mittlandet. Åkerby spring originates in Högsmossen and flows as a winding stream through the wetlands to Kvarnmossen in Vanserum. This stream still carries water when other streams on Öland are usually dry. The sequence of places illustrates its course: Högsmossen is its source, and the wetlands lie between the spring and Kvarnmossen. The comparison with other streams adds a second perspective to this geographical sequence: the stream’s distinctive water flow.

The Mittlandsleden and Trail Conditions

The Mittlandsleden runs through the nature reserve and is clearly marked in orange. For the wider region, note that the Mittlandsleden may be wet during rain or after rain in the preceding days. In such conditions, rubber boots or sturdy hiking shoes are needed. The trail markings and weather information answer different practical questions: the orange marks indicate the route, while the possibility of wet conditions matters when choosing what footwear to bring.

Archaeological Traces

Finds at the springs of Vanserum suggest that a prehistoric offering site once existed there. Another archaeological landmark is located on Vanserum’s lands: immediately north of the stone cairn Kråkrör lies a complex of five house foundations. Stenberger described it as one of the finest and most interesting on Öland. The two references make different claims: the offering site remains an interpretation, while the number and location of the house-foundation complex are specified. A cautious interpretation of the finds thus sits alongside a geographically precise archaeological reference.

The Malm Settlement and Buildings from Around 1900

Vanserum’s large Malm settlement consists of numerous huts and small-scale agricultural buildings built around the turn of the 20th century. The construction date refers to these buildings, while their large number describes the settlement as an ensemble. At the Mittlandsleden, Vanserum’s malm is identified as a well-preserved building dating from around 1900. The two details are close in time but differ in scope: the settlement is described through many types of buildings, while Vanserum’s malm is one individually identified building. Together with the finds at the springs, the Malm buildings represent a more recent historical layer than the possible prehistoric offering site.
