The Sangis River flows through Sangis and empties into Sangisfjärden south of the village. Sangis lies on a delta of fine sediments and sand and is also a village shaped by agriculture. Water, trails and cultural history offer different ways to get to know the village and its surroundings.

River activities in different seasons

The Sangis River offers good opportunities for fishing and paddling. Local rules may apply to fishing; check the current regulations before your trip. The season and local conditions are important for paddling. In summer, boat trips on the river are possible. In winter, snowmobile tours or skiing are possible along the Sangis River, although conditions may vary. When choosing when to visit, you can take these seasonal differences into account: boat trips are a summer option, while snowmobile tours and skiing are winter options.

Hiking trails in Sangis and between villages

The Skridfinnarleden is a hiking and tourist trail between Sangis and Överkalix, and is 82 kilometres long. Sangis also has a lit trail of about three kilometres that starts at Ängsvallen. The two trails differ considerably in scope: the Skridfinnarleden connects the two villages, while the lit trail is a shorter option in Sangis. Since trail infrastructure can change and maintenance of the lit trail may also vary, it is advisable to check its current condition before setting out.

The forests near Sangis also offer opportunities for outdoor activities: you can pick berries there. This option complements the trails and river activities with another way to enjoy the landscape, without requiring a particular season.

Cultural history from burial mound to museum

Sangishögen is a Viking Age burial mound dating from 800 to 1050 AD. An investigation there uncovered, among other things, parts of a human skeleton, a sword and a shield boss. Archaeological finds are therefore tangible points of reference for the village’s history.

Sangis Church is a church dating from the 1950s. There are buildings of cultural and historical value throughout the village. The Kvarngården Museum is also located by the Sangis River and is a popular destination for locals and tourists. These different sites and buildings offer various perspectives on Sangis’ history, from its Viking Age past to more recent architecture.

Landscape and excursions in the surrounding area

Cultivated land is part of Sangis’ agricultural character; at the same time, the river and delta are important landscape features. Another point of interest in the surrounding area is Sangis havsbad, a sandy beach about 7–8 kilometres southeast of Sangis in Haparanda Municipality. Its approximate distance and location outside Sangis help distinguish the beach as a separate excursion destination.

This makes it possible to choose Sangis based on the things that interest you most during your stay.
