Båtskärsnäs is an archipelago village with closely spaced buildings and narrow streets. Its sawmill era, wooden church and trails at Gullihatten give the village several points of interest; the public seaside bathing area is in Frevisören. You can shape your travel plans around culture, outdoor activities or time on the coast.
Coast and outdoor activities
The public seaside bathing area at Frevisören is right next to the campsite. It has a sandy beach and sea in three directions. If your travel plans are mainly about spending time by the water, this is a clearly defined coastal destination.
Båtskärsnäs also has a three-kilometre illuminated running and exercise trail. On Gullihatten, a boardwalk leads to a barbecue hut, a cabin and an observation tower. These options offer different experiences: one has a specified trail length, while the other has specific destinations along the route. This can help you choose between a workout and an outing with several stops.
Traces of the timber industry
Båtskärsnäs’s sawmill era lasted from the 1870s until 14 June 1968. Only the foundations of the old sawmill remain. Several buildings along the waterfront of the old settlement are connected with the timber industry and its ancillary trades. The surviving remains and waterfront buildings convey different aspects of the village’s history.
One notable example is the imposing wooden building of Boströms skeppshandel, which has been preserved together with its warehouse and outbuildings. The architectural heritage therefore extends beyond the sawmill foundations to include a surviving commercial building and its associated structures.
Church and local culture
Båtskärsnäs kyrka was inaugurated in 1974. The wooden church has a rectangular floor plan and a steeply pitched gable roof. The freestanding bell tower was added as a separate structure when it was inaugurated in 1976; the two inauguration dates are two years apart. The building’s design and dates offer a concrete way to explore the village’s more recent architectural history.
Folkets Hus is also part of Båtskärsnäs’s cultural heritage. It houses several decoratively painted stage backdrops that are over 100 years old. Together with the buildings from the timber industry era, they show that the village’s history is about more than sawmill production.
