Klavreström combines a long history of ironworks with a landscape of lakes and flowing water. The village grew up beside a watercourse between the dammed Änghultasjön and Norrsjön. Klavreströms järnbruk was founded in 1736 on the Klavreda stream. This gives travellers two distinct themes to explore: the development of a historic industrial site and outdoor activities.
Ironworks and historic buildings
The Klavreströms järnbruksmuseum tells the story of Klafreströms Bruk from 1736 to 1972. Its cast-iron objects range from wrought iron bars to modern cast-iron boilers for homes. If you plan to visit the museum, check visiting options in advance.
After Klafreströms Bruk closed in the 1970s, the manor house was preserved. The mill is also a significant and distinctive building in the historic industrial setting. It underwent extensive renovations in 2019 and 2020, with much of its appearance preserved. In 2020, Uppvidinge Municipality received the Building Conservation Award for the mill’s renovation.
Klavreström’s buildings reflect the village’s development and historic layers dating back to the 18th century. At the same time, the historic industrial setting is still used by various industrial and tourism businesses. The ironworks’ history therefore extends beyond the museum collection: it can also be seen in the architectural character and present-day use of the old industrial site.
Lakes and nature reserves
The Änghults björkhage nature reserve is in Klavreström, on the shore of Änghultasjön. The area was once pastureland available to the smiths at Klafreströms Bruk. Today, oaks form the tree layer, with hazel growing in the understory. Its former use and the present-day description of the woodland give the area both a cultural-history and a natural dimension.
Änghultasjön covers 416 hectares, is 30 metres deep and lies in the upper reaches of the Mörrumsån. Uppvidinge Golfklubb is located in Klavreström, east of the lake. The club has a nine-hole course and a driving range. If you’re planning a sporting activity as well as exploring the village’s history, this offers a different kind of experience from the local trails.
Further afield, the Libbhults ängar nature reserve is about one kilometre west of Klavreström. There are marked trails there.
Hiking and guided experiences
The Vildmarksleden trail runs for a total of 37 kilometres through the northwestern part of Uppvidinge Municipality, from Norrhult and Klavreström in the south to Lindshammar in the north. For a single day hike, the Klavreström–Kolvesjö section offers a more specific timeframe: it is 13.0 kilometres long and takes three to four hours on foot. This distinguishes the longer overall route from a section with a set walking time. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
Little Rock Lake Zipline has more than four kilometres of zipline routes through the forest. The Little Rock Lake Zipline Base Camp in Klavreström is open for spontaneous outdoor experiences without a booking. Check seasonal opening hours before visiting. Little Rock Lake also offers a four-hour guided canoe experience. It combines paddling with nature, local history and stories about Klavreström and its historic industrial community.
The time estimates make for a specific comparison: the Vildmarksleden section is estimated to take three to four hours on foot, while the guided canoe experience lasts four hours. The activities differ not only in how you get around, but also in their focus: a hiking section on the trail, or a guided tour combining paddling with nature and local history.
For geographical context, Norrhult/Klavreström is in the western part of Uppvidinge Municipality, on national road 31.
