Moheda brings together medieval architectural history, memories of school life in the past, and trails through natural and cultural landscapes. It is helpful to distinguish between the options when deciding what to focus on: the church and museums each offer their own historical perspectives, while the trails range from a route with a stated total length to one that passes through several places.

Church, Historical Objects and School History

Moheda Church is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval churches in the Diocese of Växjö. Judging by its Romanesque style, it was built in the late 12th century or by around 1200 at the latest. This dating draws attention both to its architectural style and to the church’s early history.

A small church museum is located in the parish hall. It houses some older objects from Moheda Church, including a set of stocks and a church pewter object. The museum complements the architectural perspective with objects from the church: the building’s history and individual surviving objects offer different ways to explore its ecclesiastical heritage.

The Thoragård farm offers a different historical perspective. Since the 1730s, it has remained in the same family for eight generations. The focus here is not on dating a church building, but on a family’s continuity across generations.

Moheda School Museum displays school settings from the past and has a very large collection of school posters. Its focus is therefore on earlier school life and its visual teaching materials, rather than church architecture. Visits to Moheda School Museum can be booked throughout the year. Book your visit in advance; walk-in visits without a prior booking are not guaranteed.

Walking Options Around Moheda

The Västra Sigfridsleden runs from Fridafors via Växjö and Alvesta, continuing north through Moheda. If you plan to take this route, check its current course before setting out, as the route may change. The places mentioned provide an indication of the trail’s direction, but do not imply a specific walking time.

The Klintakittan Trail offers a different option: it starts and ends at Moheda Bio and is about 4 km long in total. It follows the illuminated running track and is easy to walk with a stroller. It is a trail with a named starting and ending point, while the Västra Sigfridsleden places Moheda within a route that passes through several places. Check current trail conditions before setting off.

Nature and History at Tagel

At the Tagel farm, visitors can discover historical sights along the nature trail there. Please respect the family who lives on the property. Systerboken, a beech tree about 300 years old, stands by the nature trail. This named tree is a single natural landmark along the trail, which also leads to historical sights.

Tagel is also home to a separate beech forest called Boket, where visitors can experience the changing seasons throughout the year. Systerboken draws attention to one individual tree, approximately 300 years old; Boket offers the broader setting of a beech forest and its seasonal changes. These are two distinct nature-related features and need not be combined into a single trail.
