Vimmerby combines cultural history with places shaped by Astrid Lindgren’s life and work. Its traces range from a Neolithic stone cist to a park dating from the 1950s. In between, historic buildings, a town museum and a 5-kilometre walking trail offer different perspectives on the town.

Cultural heritage in the park, museum and church

Källängsparken is a unique park dating from the 1950s. It was designated a listed building in the summer of 2010. The Stadsmuseet Näktergalen offers a different perspective on Vimmerby’s history: this cultural history museum presents the local past.

The museum is housed in an 18th-century timber-framed building with plank cladding. Baroque paintings typical of the town have been preserved on its ceilings and walls. The building and its interiors make a visit to the museum an encounter with earlier architectural and art history as well.

Different building phases also come together at Vimmerby kyrka. Its present layout dates back to a new building constructed between 1854 and 1857; the walls of the previous church were reused on the eastern side. The pulpit comes from the earlier church: Olof Wiström and Anders Cornelius made it in 1713. It was incorporated into the present church during a restoration in 1899.

A well-preserved stone cist in Gästgivarehagen reveals an even earlier history. It shows that the area was already used as a burial site in the Neolithic period. In Vimmerby, architectural evidence from several centuries thus stands alongside evidence of the early use of the landscape.

Explore the Kulturslingan on foot

The Kulturslingan is a 5-kilometre walking trail through historically significant areas of great cultural value. It leads to well-preserved buildings along Storgatan and passes Warmbadhuset, Astrid Lindgrens Näs and the Stadsmuseet Näktergalen. Anyone looking to connect the cultural sites mentioned here in a single walk will find a specific route option here; the stated length describes the trail, not a walking time or difficulty level.

The walking trail offers a different focus from a visit centred mainly on a single building: the historic houses along Storgatan and the named cultural stops are both part of the route. The five kilometres provide a tangible sense of the distance without specifying a particular duration.

Astrid Lindgren’s life and stories

Astrid Lindgren was born at the Näs farm on 14 November 1907. She grew up there with three siblings and the other children. The garden park at Astrid Lindgrens Näs draws on her life and literary work; its design is inspired by them.

Astrid Lindgrens Värld offers a different way to encounter the stories. The park features imaginatively designed play areas and settings from Astrid Lindgren’s tales, inviting visitors to play. Visitors can immerse themselves in these settings. Biographical connections and literary interpretations thus offer different ways to engage, without providing the same kind of experience.

A scenic and active complement

Lake Nossen, a swimming lake, is within Vimmerby’s urban area and offers large grassy areas and a sandy beach. It adds a waterside spot to the cultural sites. The Wimer Bike Park is closely connected to the northern part of Vimmerby and offers another, more active perspective on a stay.

If you want to visit the tourist office, it is now located on the ground floor of the town hall. Check its current location again before your visit. For planning what to see, the differences between the walking trail, local history, connections to Astrid Lindgren and the outdoor areas offer specific points of reference, without requiring a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
