Pelarne combines a historic church village with open, very hilly surroundings. The church, archaeological traces and Mossjön offer different focal points for a stay. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether you would like to include the church heritage, the landscape or both in your travel plans.
The Church and Church Village
Pelarne Church was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century. Together with the church village, it forms the main criterion for an area of national cultural heritage interest. The cultural heritage therefore encompasses not only the church building but also the church village. There is an information board and parking by the church; check local visiting conditions before setting out. In summer, the church is usually used as a wayside church, with services, coffee and sales. This seasonal use adds specific reasons to visit in summer to the history of the building.
Hills, Burial Ground and Fortification
The area around Pelarne is very hilly and relatively open; extensive farmland and pastureland define its character. An Iron Age burial ground is located on Pelarne kulle. This gives you two specific themes to consider when planning your trip: the open cultural landscape and evidence of the Iron Age on the hill.
A fortification in the Pelarne area measures 220 × 70 metres. Steep rock faces form its boundaries, with stone ramparts serving this purpose where the slopes are less steep. A marked path leads to the fortification opposite the large erratic boulder Toppesten. Its dimensions and boundaries make it tangible as a structure in a different way from the burial ground: here, its extent and terrain features matter; there, its archaeological classification.
Mossjön, Walking Route and Getting There
Mossjön lies just outside Pelarne and covers 221 hectares. Fishing opportunities include perch, pike, vendace and other whitefish. Check fishing information before your trip if you plan to make this a focus. Alongside the agricultural and cultural history, you can therefore also choose a lake with specific fishing opportunities.
The 18-kilometre access route of the Sevedeleden, stage 4 between Mossebo and Lönneberga, passes by Pelarne Church. Check the route details before setting out. This section offers a different focus from the path to the fortification: it passes by the church, while the marked path leads to the fortification.
Pelarne is on National Road 40 between Mariannelund and Vimmerby. Pelarne has good, regular bus services for people without a car; check the current timetable before travelling. The road information places Pelarne between the two named towns, while the bus service offers practical guidance for getting there without a car.
