Tranås combines centrally located natural attractions with hiking trails, cultural heritage sites and activities on the water. Ekbergsparken Nature Reserve in the centre is home to one of Sweden’s finest stands of oak and hazel trees. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you’d like to focus on hiking routes, nature watching, culture or water. The oak and hazel trees in central Ekbergsparken offer a different experience from the Småland forest landscape of the Holavedsleden, dotted with fields and lakes.
Hiking and Nature in Tranås
The Holavedsleden begins at Hättebaden campsite in Tranås and is 59 kilometres long. It passes through a typical Småland forest landscape, dotted with fields and lakes. A shorter option is the Illern runt loop: it is 4 kilometres long and runs around Lake Illern. This makes it easy to distinguish the long Holavedsleden route from the compact Illern loop.
Illern Nature Reserve is home to a rich and diverse birdlife. The Örsbäcken outdoor recreation centre has trails, including a lit trail. A 7-kilometre mountain biking trail also leads from Örsbäcken through Illern Nature Reserve. This offers different ways to enjoy your visit, from watching nature and exploring local trails to riding a dedicated cycling route.
Culture and Events
At the Eriksbergs Museum, a former classroom with historical furnishings has been preserved. Visitors can experience what school was like in the past. The Holaveden local heritage museum comprises cultural heritage buildings dating from the 18th century. The two sites offer different ways to explore cultural history: the Eriksbergs Museum focuses on a former classroom, while Holaveden features historic buildings.
Events are also part of Tranås’ traditions. Parade marches along Storgatan have been held continuously since 1992; the tradition of open-air concerts began in 1980. If one of these events is a key part of your trip, check the specific dates in advance.
Water and Activities on Lake Sommen
Tranås harbour is a centrally located recreational marina. The toilets are open year-round, and there is also a free ramp for launching and retrieving boats. There are several places in Tranås where you can rent kayaks or canoes. Tranås Wakepark is centrally located at Östanåparken.
Hättebaden is about 4 kilometres from the centre of Tranås, on the shore of Lake Sommen. It has a child-friendly sandy beach, bathing jetties and a diving tower. On Lake Sommen, visitors can discover one of its 365 islands while sailing. The beach, harbour and water sports offer different ways to enjoy a stay, without requiring all activities to be part of the same itinerary. At the shore in Hättebaden, the focus is on the beach and bathing facilities; sailing on Lake Sommen, on the other hand, is about discovering one of its 365 islands.
