Bjärsjö brings together historical traces in the village with nature and leisure destinations in the surrounding area and beyond. The different perspectives include the village’s development, the swimming area at Trehörna, the circular trail in the Ödemark Nature Reserve and the elevated viewpoint in nearby Smesserna. This gives you a choice of whether local history, water or scenery should shape your stay.
Historical Traces in Bjärsjö
In 1695, two farmers, Nils and Erik, lived in Bjärsjö with their families. In 1800, there were four farmsteads and three torp—historic Swedish cottages or smallholder settlements. The population in 1860 is recorded as just over 70 people in total. These three points in time count different things: farmers and their families, farmsteads and torp, and the population. They therefore do not form a consistent series of figures, but each offer a different insight into life in the village at the time.
Individual torp sites also tell of different forms and periods of use. Hornbetan was one of the torp sites in Bjärsjö and a soldier’s croft settlement; it remained in use until 1937. Borgen was also a torp site and was inhabited until 1944. The dates distinguish between the end of use at Hornbetan and the end of habitation at Borgen. Another historical connection is Betania: in 1933, it belonged to the Trehörna Baptist congregation, which was founded in 1883.
Forest, Hiking Trail and Viewpoint
The Ödemark Nature Reserve lies in the wider region around Bjärsjö. Its old mixed forest includes large, old deciduous trees, 200-year-old pines and plenty of deadwood. The reserve also features diverse habitats across elevated areas, valleys and rocky slopes. The description of the area thus combines specific characteristics of the forest with a variety of landscape features.
The nature reserve has an orange-marked circular hiking trail that is 2.5 kilometres long. Its length, markings and circular route provide clear reference points for planning; trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. Nearby in Smesserna, an elevated viewpoint offers a view over the surrounding landscape—another way to experience the area compared with the forest trail.
Swimming Area and Activities near Trehörna
The child-friendly Trehörna swimming area, Trehörna badplats, is located nearby in Trehörna. It has a sandy beach, bathing jetties and a swimming platform. Facilities also include a barbecue area, a wind shelter, changing rooms, parking, a playground and a dry toilet. The information thus covers both facilities by the water and practical amenities at the swimming area.
There are opportunities to fish and rent a rowing boat at nearby Lake Trehörnasjön. A fishing licence is required to fish. These activities have different requirements: fishing requires a licence, while a rowing boat can be rented. The Östgötaleden trail runs directly through Trehörna. In the wider region, the Boxholm–Trehörna section has a marked detour to the remains of the medieval castle Mosseboborg. Trehörna therefore offers water activities and a marked long-distance hiking trail, while Mosseboborg adds a destination with a historical connection to the region’s attractions.
