Sommen lies on a long bay of Lake Sommen. The lake itself has an irregular shape and many bays and islands. The long bay describes Sommen’s location, while the bays and islands shape the character of the lake as a whole. The beach, fishing and boating activities are connected to the water; Holavedskapellet adds local history to the area. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the landscape, water activities or culture.
By Lake Sommen: Landscape and Beach
Lake Sommen is known for its clear, nutrient-poor water. In good conditions, visibility reaches 8 to 10 metres. The lake is home to 22 species; the Arctic char and lake trout are particularly worthy of protection. Sommen’s bathing area has a child-friendly sandy beach with a gentle slope. Water quality and species diversity draw attention to the lake as a natural environment, while the beach offers a specific opportunity to spend time by the water.
Visibility describes how clear the water is in good conditions; the number of species adds another perspective on the lake’s diversity. If you are looking for a place to swim, the gently sloping, child-friendly sandy beach is a useful point of reference.
Fishing, Kayaking and Sailing
Fishing is possible in Lake Sommen. There are also different ways to experience the water: you can kayak between uninhabited islands; sailing is another way to discover one of the 365 islands. These options offer different experiences: kayaking focuses on the journey between uninhabited islands, while sailing focuses on discovering an island.
There are several places to rent kayaks or canoes in the Tranås area. Sommen harbour has around 80 municipally rented berths for boats, as well as a free ramp for launching and retrieving them. Rental options and harbour facilities are two different aspects of planning a boating trip, located in different places.
Chapel, Nature Trails and Winter
Holavedskapellet was originally built as a cemetery chapel. In 1978, minor alterations were made so it could be used more effectively as a place of worship. Its history therefore includes its original function as a cemetery chapel and a later adaptation for religious services.
Trails lead into nature right next to Naturum Sommen. In winter, skiers use Sommen’s recreation area for training. Nature trails and a clearly winter-focused sporting activity are thus two distinct features.
What You Can Plan in Advance
Fishing and visiting the chapel involve different preparations: you need a fishing licence, which you can obtain through the tourist office in Tranås; a visit to Holavedskapellet can be arranged by telephone in advance. Would you like your stay to focus mainly on the beach and activities on the lake, or would you also like to include local history and nature trails? These interests can help you tailor your search for a holiday apartment in Sommen to your travel plans.
