Bottnaryd combines trails through ancient forests with church art and traces of earlier ways of life. The Sjöboleden passes fishing lakes and follows forest paths; signs along the way provide information about historic sites. Other routes go around lakes or between Bottnaryd and Huskvarna. This gives you specific nature and culture themes to consider when planning your trip, without requiring you to follow a fixed itinerary.

Trails around lakes and through the countryside

Located in central Bottnaryd, the Pärlstigen starts at the cemetery bell tower and goes around Gårdssjön. Near Bottnaryd Church, signs along the trail give information about the pearls of Frälsarkransen; there are two swimming spots along the route. A map brochure for the Pärlstigen is available in a box at the church bell tower. Here, a lakeside trail, spiritual texts and swimming spots offer a different focus from the forest-based routes.

At the start of the Sjöboleden is a local heritage museum with old farming and household equipment. Signs along the trail provide information about Iron Age graves, a quarry and a Bronze Age burial cairn. Hepatica blooms can be seen at Blåsippeberget in spring. The Sjöboleden thus combines forest paths and fishing lakes with nature watching and information about how the area was used in the past.

The Kolarleden starts at Stråkenbadet, an outdoor swimming area near Bottnaryd at the southern end of Lake Stråken. Signs along the route cover drying flax, cement casting and tar burning. The Kolarleden can be reached by bus 131 to the Bottnaryd Nygatan stop; check the timetable for your travel date. The Södra Vätterleden runs between Bottnaryd and Huskvarna. Another trail allows you to hike around Bergsjön.

Ancient forests and nature in the area

Near Bottnaryd is the Bottnaryds urskog nature reserve, a very old coniferous forest shaped by age and wind. It is home to pines 300 to 400 years old and spruces up to 200 years old; three-toed woodpeckers are also regularly seen there. A marked circular trail starts at the car park, is a little over two kilometres long and passes through large parts of the reserve.

West of Bottnaryd, Prostatallen, also known as Ullebotallen, has stood since the 16th century. Nearby, Mörtsjöåsen and Skräcklagölen offer opportunities for fishing and forest walks; the area is one of the Church of Sweden’s diocesan reserves. Alongside the ancient coniferous forest, these provide further nature areas with different focuses to include in your trip.

The church and local heritage

Bottnaryd Church was built of wood after the medieval church was demolished in 1666. Its extensive wall and ceiling paintings were created by Anders Falck of Ulricehamn between 1693 and 1695. The church is open daily in summer; outside the summer season, it is open for services and holidays. You can contact the parish staff about other opening times. Check seasonal access before your visit.

The former Ribbingska burial chapel at Bottnaryd Church houses a small museum with numerous artefacts from the 17th century. The open-air museum Reveln is on the point of land between Lakes Gårdssjön and Västersjön, just west of Bottnaryd village. Together with the historical information along the trails, these places add church and local history to the nature themes.

Circular trail, lakeside trail or route between places

The routes described differ mainly in their layouts: in the nature reserve, a marked circular trail of a little over two kilometres starts at the car park; the Pärlstigen goes around Gårdssjön; and the Södra Vätterleden runs between Bottnaryd and Huskvarna. This lets you compare a marked circular trail, a route around a lake and a route between two places, and plan your trip around the type of trail you prefer.

Bottnaryd offers a clear mix of forest nature, trails with different themes and cultural destinations. When looking for a hotel in Bottnaryd, these features can help you decide whether the area suits your planned nature and cultural days.
