Galtabäck brings together the history of fishing and shipping with an open coastal landscape and birdwatching in the surrounding area. The harbour and Båtmuseet give your stay a cultural and historical focus; nearby Gamla Köpstad Södra Nature Reserve puts the landscape and birdlife centre stage. This makes it possible to discover Galtabäck through both its maritime history and its coastline. When planning your visit, it is especially helpful to consider whether you would like to spend more time exploring the harbour and maritime history, or also allow time for nature watching.
Harbour and Maritime History
Galtabäcks hamn is one of the most authentic harbour environments on the Halland coast. The well-preserved ensemble includes fishermen’s huts and warehouses, boat moorings and navigation markers, as well as a lifeboat station dating from the early 20th century. The lifeboat station adds a distinct element of harbour life—the rescue service—to the fishermen’s huts and warehouses. Galtabäck’s harbour facilities, south of Lerjan, were established in the 19th century. The dates place the harbour facilities and the lifeboat station in different centuries, providing a timeline for two elements of the harbour landscape.
Shipwreck, Museum and Fishing
Båtmuseet is located in Galtabäcks hamn. It displays the preserved keel of the Galtabäcksskeppet, a ship dated to 1195. The “Fisket i Halland” section covers historical fishing using handlines, haddock lines, fish traps and set nets. The section broadens the focus from the preserved part of a ship to the work of fishing: rather than focusing on just one boat, it covers various fishing methods. Another archaeological link is the discovery of two medieval ships in 1928 in the bay between Galtabäck and Gamla Köpstad. Galten is a reconstruction based on interpretations of this find. The preserved keel and Galten represent different forms of preservation: a surviving part of a ship on the one hand, and a reconstruction based on interpretations on the other. Members of the Galtabäcksskeppet construction group help maintain the boats together.
Coastal Landscape and Birdlife
Near Galtabäck, Gamla Köpstad Södra is an open coastal landscape of coastal meadows, heathland and shingle fields. Many migratory birds rest in the shallow sea bay of Lerjan, particularly waders and ducks. A birdwatching tower at the southern end of the nature reserve offers views of the birdlife in the Lerjan lagoon area. The tower focuses your attention on the birdlife, while the easy-to-walk paths offer another way to explore the landscape.
Access and Swimming Area
Galtabäckshamn is an access point to the southern part of the nature reserve; there are several gravel car parks within the reserve. If you plan to visit this area, check current parking options, as parking conditions may change. Galtabäcks hamn also has a swimming area. Before visiting, check the current conditions and facilities at the swimming area, as both may change.
