Knäred brings together a distinctive river landscape, hiking trails and a varied cultural heritage. The Krokån is known for its rapids and waterfalls; the history of its buildings ranges from a mill over 400 years old to a power station dating from the early 20th century. For your trip, you can focus on water and trails, cultural history, or a mix of both.
River landscape along the Krokån
The Prästaskogen Nature Reserve lies along the Krokån, just north of Knäred. Within the reserve, the river forms a series of rapids and waterfalls, including Kvarnfallen. The river landscape also offers opportunities to swim in the rapids. Kvarnfallet is a scenic spot along the Krokån.
If you want to swim in the rapids, take care to assess the conditions on site. This lets you combine the nature experience with a specific activity, rather than seeing the river landscape only as a backdrop for walks.
Hiking on a range of scales
There are six marked hiking trails in Knäred. They start at Knäreds Fritidscenter and are maintained by Knäreds IK. A loop along the Krokån is 1.5 kilometres long and partially adapted for accessibility. The length and accessibility adaptations describe this loop; they do not apply to the other trails.
For a longer option, a roughly 33-kilometre section of the Hallandsleden passes through the area around Knäred, from Mästocka in the north to Eketsbygget in the south. The distances are very different: on the one hand, there is the 1.5-kilometre loop; on the other, a longer section of the long-distance trail. Which option suits your stay depends on how much distance you want to cover.
Cultural history and architecture
The Bollaltebygget cultural reserve in Knäred preserves a rural farm setting with buildings and a cultural landscape dating from the 19th century. Bollaltebyggetsgården was designated a listed building in 1980 and became Halland’s third cultural reserve in 2009. The reserve includes the buildings, the surrounding woodland and the adjacent heathland. The protected ensemble therefore encompasses both the farm buildings and the landscape around them.
The upper power station at Knäred is an industrial building constructed in the castle style. Its exterior remains largely unchanged, and it generates around 35 GWh per year. The power station began operating in 1910. King Gustav V inaugurated it in front of more than 400 invited guests. Its architecture, opening date and annual output offer different insights into the history of the facility.
The parish farm mill, which is over 400 years old, is located at Kvarnfallet near Knäred. The mill, cultural reserve and power station represent different aspects of the local heritage: a rural cultural landscape, a historic building by the water and industrial architecture.
Swimming and accommodation
Flammabadet in Knäred has three heated pools: a 25-metre pool with six lanes, a teaching pool and a paddling pool for the youngest visitors. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current pool setup before your visit.
Flammabadets Camping is located in Knäred and offers accommodation. If you want to stay there, check availability and operating details separately before travelling. This lets you plan your accommodation alongside the area’s nature, hiking and cultural attractions without having to follow a fixed itinerary.
