Lummelunda brings together hiking trails, a striking coastal landscape and cultural history. When choosing a focus for your trip, it helps to consider the different scales: the Klintkustleden is a specifically marked 30-kilometre route, while Bruksparken invites you to take a walk by the water. There is also medieval architecture, an industrial past and geological features to discover.

Hiking between the coast and the cliffs

The Klintkustleden is currently 30 km long and marked with orange ribbons or marker plaques. It begins in the Björkume nature reserve in Lummelunda. Björkume is both a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site. Its starting point, markings and length give you specific reference points when planning the hiking part of your trip. As route conditions may change, check the latest information about the Klintkustleden before setting out.

The Klintkustleden offers wide views from high cliffs, as well as views of old pine forest and coastal meadows. A popular hiking trail runs along the coast through Lummelunda’s coastal area. Lummelunda thus offers hiking enthusiasts both a specifically marked route and a coastal path to help guide their trip planning.

Landscape and geology

The area from Nyhamn to Lundsklint in Lummelunda is home to Gotland’s oldest bedrock visible above water. More than 4 km of the Lummelunda Cave have been explored and mapped. These are two different scales: the bedrock is described by its location in a named area, while the cave is described by the extent of its explored and mapped sections. The geological perspective therefore ranges from the landscape visible above water to cave exploration. If nature is one of your travel interests, you can take into account both the character of the landscape and the exploration of the cave.

Cultural history in two forms

Lummelunda Church was built from limestone in the Middle Ages. Industrial activity has taken place at Lummelunds bruk since the 14th century, including mills, a fulling mill and a paper mill. This gives you different cultural themes to choose from: medieval church architecture on the one hand, and several forms of industrial activity on the other. The historical span therefore extends from a medieval building to an industrial tradition dating back to the 14th century.

Bruksparken: water and autumn nature

A walk through Bruksparken follows the water on its way towards the sea. The park is a lush green oasis with distinctive plant life. In the autumn months, sea trout swim upstream into the stream to spawn; please do not disturb the fish. The waterway gives the walk a clear direction, while the plant life and spawning behaviour offer further opportunities to experience nature in the park. This makes the walk different in focus from the Klintkustleden: here, the emphasis is on the park, water and seasonal nature, while there it is on distance, markings and the hiking landscape.
