Today, Katthammarsvik’s main landmarks include the harbour and bathing area. Nearby are coastal and rocky landscapes, as well as nature reserves; in the village, a cultural centre hosts a range of events. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose to focus on local history, cultural events or hikes. The distances, landscape features and programme days below offer specific points of reference.
Limestone and building history
Katthammarsvik has a centuries-old history as a workers’ community in the limestone industry. Several old lime kilns stand at the foot of Östergarnsberget, opposite the turn-off to Katthammarsvik.
Katthamra Gård is the only manor house on Gotland. Parts of the buildings date from the Middle Ages. Peder Fleming was the first known owner and acquired the farm in 1652; this year refers to the acquisition, not to the construction of the medieval parts of the buildings. Annas Nöje was built in 1798.
Landscape and culture
Nearby Grogarnsberget combines alvar and rocky landscapes with pine woodland, small wetlands and open pebble beaches. The remains of Gotland’s second-largest hillfort are located on the mountain. Different landscape types and a historical landmark can thus be found side by side.
The Östergarns Bygdegård cultural centre in Katthammarsvik offers cinema, theatre, lectures, music and other cultural activities. In summer, it regularly hosts discussion evenings on Tuesdays, summer cinema on Thursdays and children’s matinees on Sundays. If you have a specific event in mind, check the current event dates in advance. The three formats take place on different days of the week, so during a summer stay your travel dates will also determine which cultural events you can plan to attend.
Hiking and getting around
The nearby Östergarnsberget Nature Reserve has a six-kilometre nature trail that loops around much of the reserve. A day hike on the Östkustleden runs from Katthammarsvik to Herrvik and back, covering a total of 14.5 kilometres. At 73 kilometres, the Östkustleden is Gotland’s longest hiking trail. These figures represent different scales for planning: the nature trail in the reserve, the specific day hike and the full hiking trail. The 14.5 kilometres include both the outward and return journeys. Base your schedule on the specific section and check the latest route information and conditions before setting out.
The two nearby mountains offer different points of reference for planning an outing: Grogarnsberget is known for its landscape features and hillfort remains, while the loop in Ă–stergarnsberget offers a set distance. This lets you decide whether to prioritise nature and history or a clearly specified hiking distance.
