Österfärnebo is shaped by the interplay of pine forests on the eskers and the waters of the Dalälven. At the same time, there is plenty to discover, from historic buildings and church architecture to archaeological traces and experiences on the water. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether cultural history or the waterside landscape should be your main focus.

Experience the water and landscape

Färnebofjärden National Park can be explored in your own boat or in one rented from a park partner. Choosing between bringing your own boat and renting one is therefore a practical point to consider when planning this outing. This lets you plan your boat excursion to suit your plans, without conflating it with other water activities.

Edsviken is a swimming spot on the Dalälven near Färnebofjärden Camping. Alongside exploring the national park by boat, this offers a different kind of waterside outing: swimming at a spot on the river. If you want to make the water the focus, you can start by choosing an activity.

Cycling is also recommended: several cycling routes are suggested for Österfärnebo. The PDF maps are no longer updated. Before setting out, check current route information rather than relying on these maps alone.

Historic places and architectural styles

Koversta Gammelby is distinguished by its well-preserved, authentic 18th-century buildings. The focus here is on the historic buildings as a whole. This sets the site apart from Österfärnebo kyrka, where the construction period, architectural style and arrangement of individual building sections determine its historical context.

The present, larger Österfärnebo kyrka was built between 1819 and 1822 in the neoclassical style typical of the period, replacing the older church. Its layout is symmetrical: the tower stands to the west, while the chancel and sacristy are to the east. The construction period and style place the church building in its historical context; its orientation describes how the parts of the complex are arranged in relation to one another. Together, the two provide both a sense of its place in time and a concrete description of its architecture.

Hamre gravfält offers another perspective on the area's history. The burial ground lies between Färnebofjärden on one side and Hamrefjärden on the other. It is considered the largest burial ground in Gästrikland and contains around 200 graves; seven graves are visible today. These figures refer to different things: around 200 is the total number of graves in the burial ground, while seven are visible today.

Svär-Gustavs bon also connects a historic place with the landscape: it is a summer farm by Fängsjön, from which the church on the opposite side of the lake is visible. Along with the church architecture and burial ground, this view shows how Österfärnebo's cultural history can be explored in different places.
