Voxnabruk can be explored through a range of different themes: Which traces of its former ironworks and mining industry would you like to discover, and what kind of trail suits your stay? Architecture and preserved mining remains offer tangible connections to the area’s cultural history. Hiking trails, the river and a bathing spot offer other ways to explore the surroundings. When planning, it’s worth considering the length, terrain and theme of each route.

Ironworks and Architectural History

Voxna bruk has a settlement layout typical of the 18th century. Construction of Voxna Manor began in 1791 for the owner of the ironworks at the time, Commercial Councillor J. C. Müller. The manor house is built of slag stone and timber framing—a construction technique unusual in this context. Voxna smedja was designated a listed building in 1989.

Voxna Church also offers tangible architectural details: the church is a wooden building with a tower and was consecrated in 1759. It houses a Setterqvist organ from 1888; the case of an older organ has also been preserved. The dates refer to different things: 1759 to the church’s consecration, and 1888 to the organ.

Mining Remains and Hiking Trails

On GymĂĄsberget, slag heaps, ore deposits, the mine shaft, the mine yard with cultivated plots, and the path between the mine and the ironworks have been preserved. The 9.5 km Gruvleden trail runs from the blast furnace ruins in Voxnabruk to the old mining area on GymĂĄsberget. It follows old roads and corduroy paths, combining a route through the former mining landscape with the traces preserved there.

The Naturstigen is much shorter, at around 3 km, and follows easy terrain; it is suitable for the whole family. Parts of the trail run along the scenic ridge of Galtryggen. Several signs along the way provide information about animals and the surrounding natural environment. The routes therefore offer different highlights: the longer Gruvleden, with its old paths and mining connections, or the shorter Naturstigen, with information about nature and wildlife.

River, Fishing and Swimming

A 2023 field report by the Swedish Canoe Association names canoe rental providers in Voxnabruk, between the upper stretch of the Voxnan, which is characterized by rapids, and the easier-to-paddle lower stretches near Loån and Gryckån. The report also mentions help with transport. If you’re planning a paddling trip, check in advance whether rentals and transport assistance are available.

Fly fishing for trout and grayling is possible in the flowing stretches of the Voxnan around Voxnabruk. The Voxna Södra Fisheries Conservation Association manages fishing waters in the western and southern parts of Voxnadalen, with a focus on the area around Voxnabruk. The landscape of Voxnadalen includes Hälsingland farmhouses, deep forest lakes, flowing waters and the Voxnan winding through the countryside.

The Barnstigen trail begins next to Övre Hammaren beach, by Voxnabruk’s local heritage centre, at Övre hammarvägen 52 in Voxnabruk. Results from the municipality’s bacterial sampling and checks for algal blooms are displayed for the bathing spot. Check this information before swimming.
