Flottarleden leads to a viewpoint below Tallbacken, while the canoe trip follows winding stretches of the Svåga älv. There’s also fishing and horseback riding on Icelandic horses. When planning, the difference between these experiences comes down to one practical point: on foot, the circular trail and river views take centre stage; on the water, it’s the course of the river, its banks and sandbanks.

Landscape and the Svåga älv

The Svåga älv is six Swedish miles long and has a drop of 350–400 metres. The Tallbacken area is part of the Norra Hälsinglands gammelskogar woodland value area. The Tallbacken LIS area is also associated with the national interests in Svågan, outdoor recreation and nature conservation. In this landscape context, river, forest and recreation come together.

The Svågan is also an important reference point for anglers: it is considered a popular fishing water, and its stocks of trout and grayling are particularly appreciated by recreational anglers. A fishing licence is required to fish in the river at Sördala Naturcamping. Check the current licence regulations before fishing.

Hiking, paddling and horseback riding

Flottarleden is a scenic hiking route with a circular trail; the start and finish are at the same place. Below Tallbacken, the route passes a viewpoint overlooking the Svågan. The trail thus combines a loop with a specific view of the river. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season. Check conditions before setting out.

The canoe trip starts in Ängebo and follows winding, deciduous tree-lined stretches of the Svåga älv. Along the route, steep rock faces alternate with sandbanks. The sandbanks offer opportunities to come ashore, swim and picnic. Access to individual sandbanks may change with water levels; take this into account when planning a stop.

If you’re considering a horseback ride instead of a hike or canoe trip, Tallbackens Islandshästar & Midgård offers rides on Icelandic horses. The rides vary in length and difficulty. Before travelling, check the current ride options, arrangements and booking details.

Accommodation and practical planning

Sördala Naturcamping provides specific facilities information to help you plan your accommodation. The service building has basic washing-up facilities with cold water, a fridge with a freezer compartment and a stove. There is also an outdoor toilet and a covered barbecue area with an open fireplace, benches and a long table. You can compare these facilities with your own needs when choosing where to stay. Check the campsite’s current availability before your trip.

Bookings at Tallbacken are accepted by SMS. Activities have different conditions to consider when planning: trail conditions may vary seasonally, access to sandbanks partly depends on water levels, and the available ride options and booking details should be confirmed. A fishing licence is also required for fishing in the river at Sördala Naturcamping.
