Several themes can help you plan your trip: hiking on Bergviks udde, landscapes and waterways, church architecture and industrial history. Highlights range from a circuit around the headland to deciduous woodland, a building with two named architectural styles and the history of the sulphite industry. This lets you decide, based on your interests, whether nature or culture should take centre stage during your stay.

Hiking on Bergviks udde

Bergviks udde is a recreational area used mainly for hiking and enjoying nature. From the car park, a marked trail leads along footpaths and wooden boardwalks to Bergviks udde. A footpath runs all the way around the headland. The marked approach and complete circuit can be planned as one continuous hike.

Woodland and waterways around Bergvik

The Långnäsudden Nature Reserve lies outside Bergvik, five kilometres southwest of the town. The area offers walks through lush deciduous woodland, with a diverse range of plants and abundant birdlife. Unlike the circuit on Bergviks udde, the focus here is on the forest. The two areas therefore appeal to different nature interests: the headland in one case, and deciduous woodland, plants and birdlife in the other.

The River Ljusnan flows through Bergvik. Lake Bergviken lies west of Bergvik, while Lake Marmen is to the east. These directions make it easier to distinguish between the two lakes when finding your way around. You can go paddling on Lake Bergviken in the Söderhamn area.

Church architecture by Lake Bergviken

Bergviks kyrka stands by Lake Bergviken and was inaugurated in 1915. It combines Art Nouveau and National Romanticism and is exceptionally well preserved, both inside and out. The inauguration date provides a time marker for the building; the two architectural styles and its state of preservation describe other aspects of its architecture. This offers travellers interested in architecture a distinct focus alongside hiking and landscapes.

The sulphite industry and a steam locomotive

Bergviks Industrimuseum tells the story of the sulphite mill that began operating in Bergvik in 1874. Bergvik was the site of the world’s first sulphite mill. Since 1976, the steam locomotive Tyr has been at Bergviks Industrimuseum. The dates mark different milestones: 1874 is when the mill began operating, while 1976 marks the start of the locomotive’s association with the museum.

Camping and getting around locally

For travellers with a caravan or motorhome, Bergviksparken offers basic camping pitches with and without electricity. The option of an electrical hookup is a specific point to consider when choosing this camping option.

Access to the Badkullen bathing area is in Bergvik, to the right of the power station opposite the museum. The bathing area is a few hundred metres farther on, to the left along the gravel road. As local road conditions can change, check the directions before visiting.
