Lake Venjan is a highlight for paddling: around the lake, you’ll find launch points and islands, and the lake is considered a good destination for experienced paddlers. There are also nature and cultural attractions, as well as a hiking route and cross-country ski trails to choose from. You can tailor your trip to the activities that interest you most.
Paddling on Lake Venjan
There are launch points around the lake, including in Järpesbo and at Venjan Campsite. Check the launch points locally before paddling; water and weather conditions can vary. Several other islands can be visited and circumnavigated by kayak or canoe. A trip on Lake Venjan is therefore about more than the distance travelled on the water: it’s also about which islands you’d like to include.
The Tandsjön–Dragsjön canoe route is about 7 km long. This approximate distance gives you a sense of scale for planning your route, without specifying a particular travel time.
Nature and walking trails
The wet bogs and small bodies of water in Gåstjärnskölen Nature Reserve provide good conditions for a varied bird population. The reserve is also home to old pine forests; the rare yellow-green lichen Varglav grows on some dead pines. Birdwatching, wetlands and old pines offer a variety of natural features to explore within the reserve.
The Kräggaholmsleden Venjan trail can start and end at Venjan Campsite or Kräggbergsvägen. The route alternates between gravel roads and scenic paths, with short sections featuring wooden boardwalks. This variety of surfaces is a practical consideration when planning your hike. As trail surfaces can change over time, it’s worth checking current conditions before setting out.
From Ă…sklitten, you can enjoy a view over Lake Venjan. For winter sports, Venjan Ski Stadium has hilly and easy cross-country ski trails. The two trail profiles offer different options; conditions depend on the weather. Check conditions before your visit if you plan to spend your days on the trails.
Culture and local highlights
Since July 2011, the Venjan Museum has been housed in Venjan’s old prayer house. The steamboat Tomten was built in 1862. These two details appeal to different historical interests: a museum in a former prayer house and a named vessel with a recorded year of construction.
Sockenvecka is held annually in the Venjan area. Dates vary from year to year; if you’d like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant year.
Åbackens Gårdsbageri is a farm bakery in Venjan that uses organic flour and selected ingredients. If you’re planning a visit, check its current opening arrangements in advance.
