Johannisholm combines a rich glassworks history with tours on the water and on land. Those planning a trip will find both historical traces and practical route information here—from a day of canoeing to a longer mountain biking route.
The history of the glassworks
Johan Leufqvist founded the glassworks in 1796. In 1808, it was moved to the place now called Johannisholm. The complex included a glass-grinding workshop, a stamping mill, a sawmill, and a mill. Glass production ended in 1855. This timeline shows that Johannisholm’s glassworks history includes not only production, but also a change of location and the end of production.
The industrial heritage landscape of Johannisholm includes the preserved remains of a glassworks, a glass-grinding workshop, and dam embankments. In Johannisholms Stugby, an original bakery, a chapel, a waterwheel, and cellars have been preserved. The historical traces therefore include both remnants of industry and preserved buildings and features of the Stugby.
Another historical landmark is Kättboåsens fäbodar, 2 km west of Johannisholm. Its origins date back to the 17th century, and older, unpainted wooden houses still stand there. The history of the glassworks and the history of this settlement type can thus be seen as distinct aspects of the area.
Canoe tours from Johannisholm
Johannisholm Adventure offers several canoe tours from Johannisholm. Popular tours include Venjanssjön and Orklingen. One specific route runs from Johannisholm to Finnbodarna: it is 17 km long and starts at the Johannisholm campsite on Lake Örklingen.
On the Johannisholm–Finnbodarna route, you need to portage for about 400 m before the power station; a canoe trolley is required. The route is considered a suitable day trip. For planning purposes, the portage is an important part of the route profile, not just a detail about distance. Check the route’s safety conditions before setting out, and factor the canoe trolley into your preparations.
Trails, nature, and activities
A trail about 7 km long runs through the Gnupen Nature Reserve. There are also forests, lakes, hills, and mountains in and around Johannisholm. If you prefer mountain biking, you can follow the “Venjanssjön runt” route, which is just over 50 km long. As the surface and conditions may change, check them before your ride.
Johannisholm Adventure also offers archery for participants aged 12 and over. When planning your journey, a transfer to and from Mora train station may also be relevant; Johannisholm Adventure offers this service. Transfer arrangements may change, so check in advance whether they suit your trip.
