The Iron Age burial grounds offer a concrete starting point for exploring Sollerön’s history: they are the largest and best-preserved burial grounds in Dalarna. Other highlights include the Hembygdsgården open-air museum, Sollerö Church and the opportunity to try weaving for yourself at Sollerö Vävstuga. The Kulturstigen trail offers another perspective for planning your day; the Agnmyren nature reserve combines landscape with a specific history of extraction. In autumn, a visit to the garden at Lärkastugan adds another dimension. This lets you shape your stay around history, hands-on culture or a seasonal activity.

Burial Grounds, Museum and Church

The size of the burial grounds and the finds made there show that Sollerön experienced a period of prosperity during the Viking Age. Two burial grounds from the late Viking Age lie next to the Hembygdsgården open-air museum and date from 950 to 1050 AD. The open-air museum presents the history of Sollerön. Together, they offer both a broader historical perspective and a specific archaeological context with a defined date range.

Sollerö Church is also part of the historical picture, but belongs to a considerably later period: it was built between 1780 and 1785 in the Gustavian style. Compared with the burial grounds, dated to 950–1050 AD, it was built many centuries later. The historical perspective therefore includes not only archaeological evidence but also a building from the late 18th century.

Kulturstigen Trail and Agnmyren

The Kulturstigen trail is 3.2 km long, of which 2.5 km is suitable for people with disabilities. When planning, you can consider the route’s total length separately from the section that is suitable for people with disabilities.

Agnmyren Nature Reserve is on Sollerön, in the northern part of Lake Siljan. The reserve contains Silvergruvan, a small limestone quarry where sphalerite and galena were mined. The Kulturstigen trail can be assessed in terms of its total length and the section suitable for people with disabilities; at Agnmyren, the focus is on the nature reserve and its history of extraction.

Weaving and a seasonal garden visit

Sollerö Vävstuga welcomes both beginners and experienced weavers and offers the opportunity to weave according to your own preferences. This is a different way to engage with history than visiting the burial grounds and church: here, you can try weaving yourself. The Vävstuga also features local crafts, some of which are for sale.

In autumn, you can stroll through the garden at Lärkastugan and sample apples. This activity is seasonal, offering a contrast with the historical themes and the opportunity to weave. If visiting the garden is important to your trip, plan your visit for autumn.
