Siljansnäs can be explored through a range of interests: views from Björkberget, nature watching, cultural history or cycling. In addition to the 33-metre-high observation tower, there are two nature trails in the nature reserve, activities at Naturum Dalarna and four cross-country cycling routes. Which aspects you focus on during your stay depends on whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors, visit exhibitions or explore the history of the buildings and the area. The different activities give you concrete ideas for planning.
Views and architecture on Björkberget
The observation tower on Björkberget offers views over Lake Siljan and the surrounding landscape. Its indoor platform has panoramic windows; there is also an outdoor platform. Both platforms are accessible by lift. This means you can enjoy the view both through the panoramic windows and outdoors. At the foot of Björkberget stands Siljansnäs Church. Dating from 1875, it is predominantly neoclassical in style, with some Gothic Revival elements complementing its architecture. The views and architectural history thus offer two different reasons to explore Björkberget and Siljansnäs.
Nature trails and Naturum Dalarna
Siljansnäs Nature Reserve can be explored via two nature trails. There are also opportunities for birdwatching in the forest. The exhibitions at Naturum Dalarna offer a thematic introduction to nature, covering forests, predators, the landscape of Dalarna and geology. At the bee pavilion, visitors can look directly into a beehive and observe the bees at work. These offer different ways to explore the area: observing wildlife in the forest, learning from the exhibitions or looking inside a beehive.
A short nature trail designed for children also runs around Naturum. It is about 350 metres long and surfaced with compacted gravel. Its approximate length, surface and focus on children give this trail its own character. It is an alternative to the two nature trails in the nature reserve. When choosing nature-related activities for your stay, you can decide between walking the trails, birdwatching and visiting Naturum.
Cultural history and Midsummer
The meadow Buffils Annas äng is also part of the area's history. For many generations, farmers from Siljansnäs mowed hay there for their cows and horses. The meadow's historical use offers a different perspective on the area from nature watching or the exhibitions at Naturum.
In the Siljansnäs parish, a shared celebration is held on Midsummer Eve. The procession goes from the church to the celebration site on Björkberget. If you plan to visit during Midsummer, check the programme for that year in advance.
Cycling and travelling by bus
Siljansnäs has four cross-country cycling routes. Cycling adds its own focus for activities to the opportunities offered by nature trails, birdwatching and Naturum. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether you want to spend time on the cycling routes, exploring nature or enjoying the views and cultural history.
Bus routes 282 and 281 run from Leksand towards Siljansnäs. The nearest stop to Naturum Dalarna is called Björkberget; the second-nearest is called Nimo. Routes and timetables may change, so check your connection before travelling. This lets you plan your journey around the specific activities you want to focus on during your stay.
