Insjön can be explored through a range of interests: architectural history, everyday rural life, crafts, cycling and waterways each offer a different focus. Those seeking culture will find different perspectives on buildings, objects and clothing; cycling and water activities are at the heart of the options for getting active.

Culture and History

Åhls kyrka was built from 1761 to 1767 in the Neoclassical style. Its exterior has remained largely unchanged since it was built in the 1760s.

Åhls Minnesgård in Vattberget in Insjön includes buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Its houses, fences and objects convey a picture of the living environment of a farming family over the centuries. Objects from mining in Åhls socken are also on display there. Åhls dräktkammare showcases the Åhl traditional costume and various related items, especially parts of the women’s costume.

The Clas Ohlson Museum offers a different historical focus: it presents the history of Clas Ohlson, the company and 100 years of material history. The cultural themes therefore differ: the church focuses on architectural history, Minnesgård on the rural living environment, and Dräktkammare on traditional costume. The reference to 100 years applies to material history; the company’s history is presented as a separate subject alongside it.

Crafts at Sätergläntan

Sätergläntan in Insjön offers short courses, distance courses and year-long training programmes in blacksmithing, sewing, woodworking and weaving. Cycling in Insjön

A 30-kilometre ride from Cykelfrämjandet runs mostly on paved roads and partly on gravel paths around Lake Insjön. It was developed for Leksand’s Cycling Week 2024. The municipality also identifies exercise trails in Insjön, Källberget and Siljansnäs as especially suitable for cycling.

This offers different ways to plan a cycling trip: a ride with a specified distance and surface conditions, alongside several locations the municipality highlights for exercise trails.

Waterways and Picnics

Visitors can moor at the guest pier of Insjöns Båtklubb, where electricity and water are available. Confirm that these facilities are available before you arrive. The waterway from Insjön via the Österdalälven is navigable for 15 kilometres south to Gråda kraftverk and just under 70 kilometres north to Orsa. The stated navigable distance northwards is therefore considerably longer than the distance southwards.

Prästön in Insjön is a picnic spot for visitors arriving by boat or on skates. The place is therefore associated with two different ways of arriving, though this does not mean that both are available in the same season.
