Ådalen lies right next to Jämjö in eastern Blekinge. The nature reserve is a geologically complex and unique formation in Blekinge, rare even in southern Sweden. Jämjö thus combines a distinctive natural landscape with its own local history. When planning your trip, you can consider these highlights separately and then decide what you would like your stay to focus on.

Ådalen and its trails

The Hammarbyån, part of the Åbyån, winds through fine-grained sediments and has largely retained its natural, original form. The Ådalen area has several hiking trails and rest areas. The Ådalen hiking trail listed in Jämjö is 4.0 kilometres long; a 2-kilometre section runs from Jämjö kyrka to Orionstugan.

You can walk or cycle from the centre of Jämjö to the nature reserve. The nearest bus stop is Jämjö centrum; from there, it is about a 500-metre walk to the nature reserve. If travelling by bus, check the current service before you set off. The trails in Ådalen have not been adapted for accessibility for people with disabilities. Take this limitation into account when choosing a trail.

Winter trails and a range of distances

At Furudalsvägen, there are illuminated running and cross-country ski trails measuring 870 metres, 1.4 kilometres, 2.4 kilometres, 5.0 kilometres, 8.4 kilometres, and 10.2 kilometres. This gives you a choice of distances, from a short loop to longer routes. Winter availability depends on snow conditions; especially if you are planning a ski outing, it is a good idea to check conditions in advance.

Jämjö kyrka and local history

Under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Heritage Conservation Act, Jämjö kyrka is protected as a church cultural heritage site. Bishop Wilhelm Faxe consecrated it on 22 October 1826. It was named Oscars kyrka after the crown prince at the time. The history of the present building also reaches back to an older church: the former medieval stone church in Jämjö was demolished starting on 27 April 1824, and stones from it were reused in the construction of the present church.

Jämjö Skjutsstation also represents an earlier chapter in local history. Its origins as a travel centre date back to the 17th century. The Östra Blekinge Hembygdsförening holds photo exhibitions there. If an exhibition fits your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Practical places to visit

Jämjö Library offers family history programmes and free Wi-Fi. After registering, you can access the library daily from 07:00 to 22:00 as part of its extended unstaffed opening hours; this arrangement may change. The library is accessible to wheelchair users: the main entrance has a wheelchair lift and an automatic door opener, while the rear entrance has a ramp and a disabled parking space. As facilities may change, confirm the current access arrangements before your visit.

Near Jämjö, Kaffestugan is located at the Hallarumsviken bathing area. It serves homemade coffee bread, toast, waffles, sweets, and ice cream. The selection is seasonal and may change.

You can assess Jämjö as a place to stay according to these different interests: Ådalen offers trails through a geologically distinctive landscape, while Jämjö kyrka and the Skjutsstation tell local history. When planning your routes, the distance and the lack of accessibility adaptations in Ådalen are important considerations; if you want to visit the photo exhibitions, check the dates.
