Holmsjö can be explored through two specific points of reference: the railway station in the centre of the village and Bredasjön in the northern part of Holmsjö. The history of Sillhövda Church and historical references to the village add further context. These are different points of reference for your planning: the railway helps you orient yourself when travelling there, while the lake and the church’s history show different sides of the place.
Plan your train journey and accommodation
Holmsjö railway station is in the centre of Holmsjö. The Krösatågen trains take you south to Karlskrona and north to Emmaboda. From Emmaboda, further train connections are available to Kalmar, Växjö, Alvesta and Gothenburg. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable and the onward connection that suits you before setting off. The places mentioned show the directions in which you can continue your journey from Holmsjö.
When looking for accommodation in Holmsjö, the centrally located railway station can serve as a point of reference if train travel is part of your stay. For your specific choice, compare the accommodation address with your arrival and sightseeing plans. This lets you base your choice of location on the journeys that matter most to you, rather than assuming that one accommodation is located like another.
Bredasjön and the Holmsjö Triathlon
The sports ground and bathing area at Bredasjön are in the northern part of Holmsjö. They are accessible via the road towards Eringsboda, Road 653. The lake is four metres deep and drains into the Silletorpsån watercourse. If you include Bredasjön in your plans, Road 653 is a named access route to the northern part of the village.
The Holmsjö Triathlon, a competition approved by the Swedish Triathlon Federation, takes place at Bredasjön in midsummer. The event venue is in Holmsjö, in Karlskrona Municipality in Blekinge. Check the details for the relevant date before travelling. In addition, Holmsjö Triathlon’s triathlon section has been part of SAIK since 2014. It offers the opportunity to try triathlon, including swimming, cycling and running. Event formats may change; if you are interested in this opportunity, check the details of the format you want in advance. The competition and the section’s offering are therefore two different points of interest for sports enthusiasts.
Sillhövda Church and local history
Sillhövda Church has a medieval altarpiece dating from around 1480, considered the oldest in Blekinge. The church in Holmsjö was inaugurated on 9 December 1945. The artwork and the inauguration date point to different periods in the church’s history. The bell tower of the former Sillhövda Church is also part of the village’s history: it was saved from a fire and moved to the cemetery.
Holmsjö is an old village. The place was first mentioned in 1349 in a deed of gift from King Magnus Eriksson to the Bishop of Växjö. Under the deed, the bishop received eight villages in Fridlevstad parish as episcopal table estates. Holmsjö’s history can thus be traced to a specific date and a named document.
The historic transport route offers another point of reference: Holmsjö lay on the highway from Växjö via Fuhr to the old town of Lyckeby. According to tradition, the tanner Carl Magnus Mårdh moved to Holmsjö in 1830 and gave the tannery there his name. Along with the history of the church, this adds further chapters of local history to the railway and lake as points of reference.
