Fågelmara lies on the E22 between Karlskrona and Kalmar. Its defining historical themes include the railway station and railway; Högasand, with its dunes and old pine trees, is nearby. You can therefore consider local history, coastal exploration and places to eat or stay as different parts of your visit.

Railway station, railway and crafts

Fågelmara’s railway station building and its annex are considered particularly valuable from a cultural-historical perspective. The old railway line is also addressed in the local plan: the detailed plan aims to preserve its area as a green corridor, while the station building is to remain the defining building. The plan became legally binding on 29 May 2026. This is a planning objective, not a statement that the redevelopment has already been completed.

Fågelmara developed after the railway between Karlskrona and Torsås was built in 1899. At Fågelmara, the railway crossed the old main road through the county where the turnoff to the then small town of Kristianopel joined it. The history of Fågelmara krukmakeri pottery is also part of the local history: Lars Larsson founded it in Fågelmara in 1976; it made household and decorative stoneware items. The pottery ceased operations in 1994 after a fire.

Högasand and the coastal route

The Högasand Nature Reserve is located near Fågelmara. Its dune landscape is characterized by tall pine trees up to 300 years old, with trails for visitors winding between the trees. To get there, turn off the E22 at Fågelmara, drive towards Kristianopel, then follow the coastal road north for about two kilometres. This is an approximate distance. It is a good idea to briefly check the route before setting out in case the roads have changed.

At Fågelmara, the Kustvägen Sydost also branches off the E22 towards the sea. You can explore the road by car or bicycle. The two routes therefore offer different ways to get around: Högasand has a specific set of driving directions, while the Kustvägen Sydost is a road you can explore by two different means of transport.

Accommodation and scenery

Fågelmara Gård offers accommodation and holiday homes in a stately setting. The estate dates back to the 17th century. It includes a park-like garden with an old summerhouse, mature oaks and pastureland, as well as a walking path to its own bathing island. If you include this accommodation in your plans, check the booking details before your trip.

Lantluft also offers accommodation. Its farm shop and café serve homemade baked goods, light lunches and farm products; what is available may vary by season. Dishes include, among other things, cheesecake, sea buckthorn pastries, shrimp sandwiches and Gubbröra. These menu examples may change depending on availability.

Farm shops and seasonal food

Bond-butiken sells products from its own farm and nearby producers, mostly organically or without chemical treatments. The selection changes with the seasons and according to availability. It includes, among other things, asparagus, potatoes, strawberries, carrots, onions, beetroot, Västerås cucumbers, sweetcorn, Jerusalem artichokes, honey and Otto’s ice cream. The long list shows how varied a visit to the farm shop can be; however, you should not count on individual products being available all year round.

Grettlinge gårdsbutik offers homegrown potatoes, onions and vegetables, as well as eggs from its own chickens and quail. Product availability may vary by season. The farm shop also stocks sheepskins, handicrafts and wool products; availability may vary for these as well.

Våffelgården serves savoury and sweet waffles, along with other homemade dishes made with ingredients grown on the farm. The site is surrounded by woodland and meadows, with farm animals grazing nearby. Opening times and availability may vary seasonally, so it is worth checking what is on offer before visiting.

Fågelmara’s food history also includes the history of Orkla’s operations: it began in 1915, when Harry Althini founded a business exporting eels. A cannery was built in Fågelmara in 1930, where production of pickled chicken, meat and fish products began. These dates add a distinct historical perspective on food production to today’s farm shops and places to eat.
