The Ruta Amarilla connects Villargordo del Cabriel with the Cabriel River and the former bridge of Vadocañas. It provides the framework for a longer hike; nature watching, architectural history and local festivals offer further highlights for a stay.

Walking trails with different points of reference

The Ruta Amarilla is a linear historic trail from Villargordo del Cabriel to Vadocañas. It leads to the Cabriel River and the former bridge of Vadocañas, is 16 kilometres long and takes approximately four and a half hours one way. The difficulty level is moderate. Bear in mind when planning your day that the stated duration is for one way. Trail conditions may change.

Another walking option is the marked PR-CV174, which runs through the municipality. Check its markings on site. The two routes offer different points of reference for planning: the Ruta Amarilla has a stated length, approximate duration per direction and difficulty level; for the PR-CV174, its route through the municipality is the main point of reference.

Take in the river landscape and nature

Along the river in the Parque Natural de las Hoces del Cabriel, you may spot protected golden eagles, Bonelli's eagles and eagle-owls. The valley is also home to well-preserved riparian forests of poplars, willows and tamarisks, as well as reed beds. This landscape offers a different focus from the linear hike: here, the emphasis is on the river environment, vegetation and opportunities for birdwatching rather than the route itself.

Kayaking is another possible activity in the nature park. If you would like to include it in your plans, check a specific offer in advance. From Villargordo, you can also reach the striking rock pinnacles of Los Cuchillos and the Fuenseca Valley in the Hoces del Cabriel landscape. The Embalse de Contreras is also part of the town's natural and landscape heritage. The highest point in the municipality offers views of the nature park; it is also home to a forestry lookout station.

Church, telegraph tower and engineering works

The parish church of Villargordo del Cabriel dates from the 18th century, was later extended and was built in the Neoclassical style. Its works of art include an image of Saint Cecilia from the 17th century and a painting of the Virgen del Carmen from the 19th century. The different dates of origin give the church its own art-historical perspective, in addition to its later extension and architecture.

Northwest of the town, on the Sierra del Romeroso, stands the Torre del Telégrafo de Villargordo del Cabriel. In 2011, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, along with the optical telegraph towers between Madrid and Valencia. Another example of engineering history is the Puente de Contreras: built between 1825 and 1852 as part of the Carretera de las Cabrillas project, it is considered one of the major engineering works of the 19th century.

The Trincheras de Contreras are part of a network of fortifications from more recent history. They are associated with the Peninsular War of 1808 to 1812, the Carlist Wars of 1846 to 1849 and 1872 to 1876, and the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939. Together with the church, telegraph tower and bridge, the fortifications offer a historical perspective on very different eras and building purposes.

Local festivals and cuisine

The Fiestas Patronales in honour of San Roque are celebrated in August. A communal “zahora” is also held as part of a bonfire gathering, with meat, cured meats and potatoes roasted in the embers. These traditions add a glimpse of communal festivities to the walking and cultural themes.

The cuisine of the wider region may also play a part in planning your trip: hearty dishes such as ollas, gazpachos, embutidos and tortas magras are among the local specialities, along with olive oil and wines from the D.O. Utiel-Requena. These dishes and products provide a regional context that extends beyond the individual buildings and walking trails.
