Otos brings together sundials dotted throughout the town and hiking trails in the Benicadell landscape. It also features a chronologically arranged collection of works by Antoni MirĂł and buildings with a clearly traceable history. This lets you treat culture in town and hiking as distinct focuses of your stay.

Sundials throughout the town

The Route dels Rellotges de sol began in 2005 as a project to create eight sundials by Valencian artists. Today, the growing collection comprises more than thirty sundials. They are spread throughout the town and form an open-air museum. Comparing the original project with the collection as it stands today shows how it has developed beyond its beginnings.

Hiking from Otos

The SL-CV 10 hiking trail is called “Otos i el Paisatge Protegit de l’Ombria del Benicadell” and starts on C/ de Sant Roc in Otos. It is a circular route, with sections of the outward and return legs overlapping. The trail is 9.40 km long and has 440 metres of elevation gain and 440 metres of descent. When planning, consider the distance, elevation and route type together: each describes a different aspect of the circular route.

Along the way, the trail passes the Nevera de Tormo and comes close to the Cueva Coleto. The route is promoted by the Otos Town Council. At the most recent quality check, recorded in November 2024, its status was positive.

Other trails from Otos lead to l’Ombria del Benicadell, where the ruins of Castell de Carbonera are located. Otos is also a starting point for a hike to Benicadell. Alongside the circular route with its stated distance and elevation, there are therefore other named destinations to choose from for hikes.

Art and architectural history

The permanent collection of Antoni Miró at the Palau d’Otos includes more than 200 works. The monographic tour is arranged chronologically and takes visitors through different phases of the artist’s work and series. On Sundays, the collection can be visited as part of the guided Route dels Rellotges de sol. As visitor arrangements can change, check the details before your trip.

The two art offerings have different focuses: the sundials are spread throughout the town, while the collection at the Palau presents one artist’s works in chronological order.

The church of L’Església de la Immaculada Concepció was built between 1721 and 1724 and consecrated in 1742. It has three naves and a dome above the crossing, where the church’s naves intersect. Another historic building is the Palau del marqués de Sant Josep. Joan Nunyes built the Baroque palace in 1725. Its main structure is cube-shaped, with a tower attached to the rear. When comparing the dates, it is worth distinguishing between the church’s construction and its later consecration: the palace dates from 1725, while the church was consecrated in 1742.

Festivals and culinary events

Otos’s patron saint festivities take place every year from 6 to 8 August in honour of Cristo de la Fe, Santos de la Piedra and Inmaculada Concepción. As programme details may change, check the programme in advance. Dia de les Cassoletes is celebrated on the Thursday before Carnival and puts pig’s ear and pig’s snout in the spotlight.

The two dates provide different ways to plan ahead: the patron saint festivities fall on fixed dates in August, while Dia de les Cassoletes is tied to Carnival.
