Tuéjar combines a protected river landscape with historic buildings, viewpoints and regional cuisine. When planning a stay, visitors can choose between nature experiences along the Río Tuéjar, culture in the town and recurring festivals. This offers different sides of the destination to explore, without reducing nature and local history to the same experience.

River Landscapes and Viewpoints

The Nacimiento del Río Tuéjar municipal nature area lies within the municipality of Tuéjar, in the province of Valencia. It was designated in 2013 and covers 600 hectares. Within the protected nature area, the Riberas del Río Tuéjar plant micro-reserve was established in 2002. The two designations refer to different geographical levels: the nature area and the micro-reserve established within it.

Nesting sites for griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) were established in La Lácaba in 2011. From El Azud, La Lácaba can be reached via a forest track, along a route of about four kilometres. The Mirador Peña del Mediodía offers a different view of the landscape. The viewpoint lies near the source of the Río Tuéjar at an altitude of 787 metres. From there, the panoramic view extends across the El Azud nature area, from Puente de Tudela to the distinctive cliffs of La Lácaba and the griffon vulture nesting sites there.

Trails and Summer Swimming Spots

The El Azud recreation area has tables and shaded spots for picnics. The Ruta del Azud begins at Fuente del Saz and runs alongside the Tuéjar River. There, the river forms several shallow pools that are suitable for cooling off in summer. The Pozo de las Escaleras lagoon is also located near El Azud and is suitable for swimming during the summer months. The uses described for these swimming spots therefore differ: the pools at Fuente del Saz offer a place to cool off, while the lagoon is suitable for swimming.

Buildings and Cultural History

El Cubo is a restored Muslim watchtower that was later repurposed as a wine-making vessel. The top of the tower offers panoramic views of Tuéjar and the surrounding area. The Mirador Peña del Mediodía offers a different perspective, with views over the El Azud nature area.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles was built in the second half of the 17th century on the town’s main square. The Portal de los Santos was the main gate to the medieval settlement of Tuexa. Ceramic altarpieces depicting San José and San Roque stand on either side.

The Nevero de la Lácaba also tells of an earlier use of the landscape: the circular snow storage structure was built in the Middle Ages in a shaded location to store snow, and is now part of the cultural heritage. At Corrales de Silla, the rock paintings in Shelter II are recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest. They are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the designation “Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.”

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

Festivals are held in Tuéjar every year on 15 August and 8 December. The festival on 8 December is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, Tuéjar’s patron saint. Every five years, the town also holds large celebrations known as “gordas.” These include a procession, performances of the Entramoro and the “rodá,” the waving of the flag. The annual calendar and the five-year cycle offer different occasions to consider when choosing when to travel.

Local cuisine includes Olla de pueblo, made with potatoes, cardoons, beans and pork, as well as Gazpacho tuejano, made with flatbread and chopped rabbit and chicken. Other specialities include meat and cured sausages, along with traditional sweets: Mantecados and Muégados, which are of Arab origin. Alongside river landscapes and cultural heritage, specific dishes and regional food culture also offer themes to explore during a stay.
