At the Cañones del JĂșcar, the river runs between high, sheer cliffs; you can explore the landscape by boat or on hiking trails. Cofrentes also offers trails along the Cabriel, a volcano site open to visitors, and insights into local history and regional cuisine. The activities vary depending on whether you want to explore by water, on foot, by bike, or with a focus on culture and thermal experiences.
The JĂșcar and trails through the landscape
The Ruta fluvial del JĂșcar is a boat trip between Cofrentes and Cortes de PallĂĄs. A boat acquired by the Cofrentes Town Council, with space for 50 passengers, covers the 14 km route across the Cortes reservoir in just over an hour. The trip begins at the former Embarcaderos dam, where there is a landing stage. There are parking spaces, a covered waiting and rest area, and an information and ticket office. Before your visit, check the current departure times and services at the landing stage.
If you prefer to explore the landscape on foot, there is a network of trails covering a total of 57 km. The trails pass through varied landscapes at Monte Alcola, along the Cabriel, at the former mining site of the Cerro de Agras volcano, and around the Hervideros de Cofrentes spa. The Cañones del JĂșcar can also be explored on hiking trails. The boat trip and hiking offer different ways to discover the cliffs and river landscape.
Cycling, birdwatching and nature excursions
The Centro BTT includes nine signposted routes through Cofrentes and nearby towns; together, the routes cover about 259 km. This total describes the trail network, not the length of a single ride. Cofrentes also offers birdwatching routes, particularly along the banks of the Cabriel and JĂșcar. As well as exploring the trails, you can make the riverbanks a focus of your visit.
The Tren TurĂstico follows the course of the Cabriel and provides access to natural attractions in the municipality and its surroundings. Together with the boat trip on the JĂșcar and the hiking trails, it offers another way to discover nature destinations. Before making detailed plans, check the current departure options for these excursions, as operating schedules may change.
Cerro de Agras is a volcano site open to visitors and is considered the only geologically recent volcano in the Comunitat Valenciana. It adds a geological point of interest to the river landscapes. Nearby trails also pass the volcanoâs former mining site.
Local history and cultural sites
The Ruta urbana through Cofrentes leads to the townâs most representative cultural, historical and heritage sites and is suitable for all visitor groups. Historical sites include the Parroquia de San JosĂ©, built in 1621 on the former site of the Cofrentes mosque. Castillo de Cofrentes also has a later history of use: after the expulsion of the Moriscos in the early 17th century, Pedro Centelles de Borja transformed it into a palatial residence.
Cueva de Santa Ana was once a wine press. Agricultural produce and products from home butchering were stored there. Together, these sites reveal different aspects of local history: religious architecture, the castleâs later transformation, and the former use of an agricultural building.
May festivities, cuisine and thermal experiences
The Maderada is celebrated during Cofrentesâ May festivities. It commemorates the work of the log drivers between the 14th and 18th centuries. If you want to plan your visit around the festival, check the current dates and programme details.
One local culinary specialty is Ollica Cofrentina, made with typical regional ingredients: pinto beans, chard, ham bone, pigâs foot, bacon, backbone, blood sausage, lamb and potatoes. Restaurants in Cofrentes can prepare the dish to order.
Balneario de Cofrentes combines medical thermal treatments with physiotherapy programmes. Its offerings include outdoor activities, guided visits, a thermal circuit, and medical, wellness and beauty treatments. If a particular service is essential to your trip, check in advance whether it is currently available.
