In Rocafort, the Acequia Real de Moncada marks the transition between the town center and the Huerta. This contrast shapes a stay with different focal points: walks through the landscape alongside a remarkable architectural and literary history.
Town Center, Acequia and Huerta
The Acequia Real de Moncada forms the boundary between Rocafort’s town center and the Huerta and runs for 670 meters through the municipality. Rocafort’s Huerta is distinguished by its landscape and natural diversity. At the covered section of the acequia, a walk offers views of one of the best-preserved areas of Valencia’s Huerta.
On the eastern edge of the municipality, Parque RamĂłn Fontestad lies beside the acequia, with views of the Huerta. A network of paths and trails can be explored on various routes through the park. The two options offer different experiences: views of the Huerta are the focus along the covered section, while Parque RamĂłn Fontestad offers paths through the park.
Traces of Machado around Villa Amparo
Villa Amparo is a historicist chalet in the neoclassical style, built at the beginning of the 20th century. The estate includes a large garden, a fountain, monumental benches and a garden pavilion. From November 1936 to March 1938, the house was the residence of the poet Antonio Machado; during his stay, he wrote numerous press articles and several poems.
Villa Amparo is listed with protection level 2 in the inventory of protected elements in Rocafort’s urban development plan. Its designation as a Bien de Relevancia Local (Local Heritage Asset) has been proposed and still requires regional approval. Public art also references Machado: a mural next to the villa was created in 2009 and depicts Ramón Gaya’s portrayal of Machado crossing a bridge over the acequia. Since 2014, a sculpture based on one of Gaya’s vignettes in the magazine “Hora de España” has stood opposite the villa, on the promenade above the acequia.
The Machado walking route begins at Villa Amparo, then passes the Acequia Real de Moncada and ends at the metro station, the former “Trenet.” Check local visiting arrangements before your trip.
Architecture from Different Centuries
The cloister of the former Augustinian monastery dates from the 15th century and is attached to the church. It has a rectangular floor plan with a fountain in the center. Its two levels are distinctly different: the ground floor has 16 round arches supported by 20 cylindrical columns, while the upper gallery has 12 round arches. The ground-floor walls feature a collection of tiles dating from the 16th to the 19th century.
Casa Bou, Rocafort’s former manor house, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. Notable details include the balcony tiles and a garden tower with palm trees. The Church of San Sebastián dates from the 16th century. Together with the more recent Villa Amparo complex, these buildings show that Rocafort’s heritage spans several historical periods.
Culture, Festivals and Local Cuisine
The program at the Casa de Cultura’s event hall ranges from theater, dance and performing arts to concerts, musical performances, film screenings and film series. It also includes workshops, conferences and educational activities. Check separately which events fall within your travel dates.
Rocafort’s main festivals are a recurring tradition held in late August and early September. They honor Saint Augustine, the Virgen del Consuelo, Saint Barbara and the Cristo de la Providencia. Check the festival dates for your travel period. Traditional dishes include Valencian paella, arroz al horno and arroz a banda. Coques cristines, an almond pastry, are associated with the local patron saint festivals.
Which Focus Suits Your Stay?
If you are interested in architectural history and literature, Villa Amparo, the monastery cloister and Casa Bou offer different points of interest. For a connection to the landscape, choose a walk along the covered section of the acequia or one of the various routes in Parque RamĂłn Fontestad. This makes it possible to explore Rocafort according to your interest in heritage or the Huerta landscape, without treating the two as equivalent.
