Riba-Roja De Túria lies on the banks of the Turia and in the heart of Turia Natural Park. The river landscape and cultural heritage offer different points of focus: you can explore paths by the water or learn about Visigothic history, archaeological finds and historic buildings. You can weigh up which discoveries to focus on as early as the trip-planning stage.
River Landscape and Trails
The Puente Viejo, also known as the Puente del Conde, is documented as far back as 1548. Historically, it served pedestrians, the transport of agricultural produce and goods, and the driving of livestock across the Turia. Its history therefore represents not only a river crossing on foot, but also the transport of goods and animals.
The Ruta Verde starts at the Puente Viejo. It runs along the right bank of the Turia through a riverside landscape, passing rest areas, monumental trees and bridges. If you would like to experience the river setting on foot, this described hiking route takes you past these landmarks; check the route conditions before setting out.
Kayak trips are also offered on the Turia through the surroundings of the natural park. Routes of 5, 8 and 12 kilometres are available. This lets you choose between different route lengths rather than committing to a single distance. Check availability and river conditions before booking.
The Ruta Roja hiking route starts at Masía Traver metro station, making it possible to get there without a vehicle of your own. This offers a different planning option from a kayak trip: here, the focus is on starting a route at a metro station, while with kayaking you choose between three routes. Check transit and route conditions before travelling.
Archaeology and Local History
Pla de Nadal is a Visigothic residential villa dating from the 7th century and one of the few surviving examples of Visigothic civil architecture in Europe. MUPLA displays more than a hundred sculptures discovered at the Pla de Nadal archaeological site. This offers two distinct ways to explore Visigothic history: the site itself and a collection of sculptures recovered there.
Other places also tell the story of Riba-Roja De Túria’s development. La Cisterna was built opposite the Castillo to supply the population with water from the river. Llavaor Vell is the oldest and only surviving washhouse in the municipality; in 2010, it was restored while preserving its original structure and features. The two buildings reveal different aspects of local history: the water supply and a former place for washing.
The Museo de Cerámica del Castillo houses medieval ceramics from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, recovered during archaeological excavations at the Castillo. Casa de la Molinera is a grain mill building erected in the 15th century, recognised as ethnological heritage and open to visitors. It presents the everyday life of the miller and her family, as well as flour samples, administrative documents and office items.
MUPLA visitors can use an accessible visitor route with a lift and ramps, a model of the Pla de Nadal palace for blind visitors, and adapted toilets. An induction loop is available by prior arrangement. If these details are important for your visit, it is best to confirm them in advance.
Dining and Culinary Events
The annual Banquete Visigodo combines a tasting of the Menú Visigodo with a theatrical visit to the Pla de Nadal site. The annual Certamen de arroces showcases the local rice dish with a cooking demonstration and tasting alongside participating restaurants. Check the dates for both events before your trip.
The Menú Visigodo draws on Visigothic ingredients and cooking techniques. These include grains, spicy dressings, roasted meat with vegetables, tubers and spiced fruit. Participating venues may change. The menu offers its own culinary connection to Visigothic history, while the Certamen de arroces puts the local rice dish centre stage.
