Picanya brings together traces of its historic farmhouses, architecture, a themed walking route and cultural traditions. It also has a cycling network spanning more than 18 kilometres and local rice dishes. For your stay, you can focus on the historic centre, outdoor activities or festival dates; the details below offer different starting points for exploring the town.

Farmhouses and the History of Picanya

Picanya’s origins are traced back to a Muslim farmhouse. During the Reconquista, James I transferred it, along with Torrent, to the Order of the Hospitallers in 1238. The old town lies in the area of the former farmhouses of Sant Joan del Mercat and de Martí; this area forms the earliest known urban core. The Alquería de Raga, also of Muslim origin, is considered one of Picanya’s oldest monuments and one especially valued by the local population.

Another local landmark is the AlquerĂa de Foia. It lies in the north of the municipal area, in the Huerta de BenĂ ger and north of the Barranco de Chiva. It can be reached via the CamĂ de la Foia. The Huerta de BenĂ ger is characterised by typical farmhouses and an irrigation tradition dating back to the Andalusian period. The location of the farmhouse and the landscape of the Huerta are two distinct aspects of this area.

Architecture and Walking Route

The Centre Cultural is a building dating from 1910, with a Modernist façade and an eclectic appearance. Today, it serves as a cultural centre for performances and events. The Església de la Verge de Montserrat offers a different architectural perspective: this Renaissance church dates from the 17th century and consists of three naves arranged in the shape of a Latin cross. The Ateneu is a representative civic building in Picanya and a noteworthy destination for visitors. The buildings can thus be viewed from different perspectives: their construction dates, architectural forms and present-day cultural functions.

The Ruta del Agua is a walking route where you can discover the town’s cultural, water-related and natural features. Stops include the Molí de la Villa and the Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza. The route offers a themed focus, while the church, Centre Cultural and Ateneu each provide their own architectural points of interest.

Festivals, Cycling Routes and Transport

The Festes Majors include street parades, music and theatre performances, processions and flower offerings. The Corpus Christi celebration features a flower carpet for the procession and traditional dances. The Sant Antoni Abad tradition includes a public blessing of animals, especially horses and donkeys. The Falles are celebrated from 15 to 19 March; programme details may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the latest dates and programme in advance.

Picanya has an extensive cycling network spanning more than 18 kilometres within the municipal area. It offers panoramic views across the Huerta and passes areas with numerous tree species. The specific route may change, so check it when planning a cycling trip. Picanya is connected to Valencia by a Metrovalencia station served by lines 1, 2 and 7. As service details may change, it is advisable to check the current timetable for your travel date.

Rice Dishes and Local Cuisine

Picanya’s local cuisine includes rice dishes such as paella, arròs a banda and arròs amb fesols i naps. Arròs a banda is a typical seafood dish; arròs amb fesols i naps is prepared with beef and pork. The examples therefore range from a seafood dish to a rice dish with meat. The names and ingredients give you a practical guide if you want to factor the local cuisine into your plans.
