In Sot de Chera, discovery ranges from distinctive geological formations to buildings with a clearly documented history. El Anticlinal, the riverside areas and the historic sites appeal to different interests. When planning your trip, also consider the conditions for individual visits: Castillo de Sot de Chera and La Almazara del Conde can be visited by prior reservation.
Rock Formations and Riverside Areas
El Anticlinal is a geological landmark featuring an almost perfect fold between several layers of rock. The focus is therefore on the shape of the layers themselves. Those wishing to include geological features in their explorations, alongside local history, will find a subject in its own right here.
At La Canal, the river forms natural pools surrounded by dense vegetation. Here, the focus is on river features and plant life, whereas El Anticlinal is defined by its rock folding. Together, they offer different perspectives on nature without reducing them to a single description of the landscape.
On the RĂo de Sot, there is a public area used as a pleasant walking route in winter and for swimming in summer. Locally, it is known as “Charco El Gruñidor”. The seasonal distinction makes the different uses clear: walking in winter, swimming in summer. Conditions may vary, so bear this in mind when planning a swim.
Walking Routes and Current Planning
A 2020 tourism brochure describes the PR-CV 414 CUESTA LARGA as an officially approved short-distance walking route. It passes through the area around the Cuevas del MorrĂłn and the Fuente Fetge recreation area. These caves and the recreation area are the two named landmarks in the route description. Route conditions may change.
There is a different practical consideration for the RĂo Sot route: it is currently not accessible on foot. This status was checked on 27 August 2026. Check locally for the latest information before setting out.
Castle, Church and Museum
Castillo de Sot de Chera is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category and is listed in the General Register of Assets of Cultural Interest of Spain’s historical heritage. Sections of the walls and the remains of a square tower have survived. The protection status and the surviving structures offer two different ways to explore the site’s history: one identifies its heritage designation, while the other describes the parts that remain. Visits are possible by prior reservation and are free of charge.
Iglesia de San Sebastián Mártir was completed in 1695. It is designed in the late Baroque style and also shows Neoclassical influences. Its stylistic classification therefore goes beyond a single label. Two specific works of art also form part of the church’s art-historical interest: the Sagrario triptych and the altarpiece are attributed to Juan de Juanes. The completion date, architecture and attribution offer different avenues for exploring the history of the building and its art.
La Almazara del Conde is a small museum. On display is a crushing mill used for the artisanal production of oil. The exhibit gives the museum a clearly defined theme and a specific connection to oil production. Here too, visits are possible by prior reservation and are free of charge.
