Jativa combines a striking twin fortress with a historic town center, important collections and the nearby natural area of Cova Negra. Visitors can choose from a range of interests during their stay: architecture and history in town, art and archaeology in the museums, or trails through the landscape. Fortress and historic town center
Castell de Xà tiva consists of two parts, Castell Menor and Castell Major. The fortress is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. It offers panoramic views of the town and its surroundings. If you are planning a visit, check access information in advance, as visiting conditions may change.
The Old Town as a whole is also of particular historical interest: it was designated a Conjunto HistĂłrico-ArtĂstico in 1982. Its monumental heritage can be explored on a leisurely walk. This offers two different perspectives: a stroll through the streets takes you through the historic town center, while the fortress opens up views across the town and its surroundings.
Church and Borja heritage
Iglesia de Sant Feliu was built in 1265 after the Christian conquest by Jaume I. It stands on the remains of a former Visigothic cathedral. Its Romanesque portal is one of the few examples of this architectural style in the Valencian region. The building’s history and portal give a visit to the church a distinct architectural focus.
Another way to link historic sites is the Ruta de los Borja. The route leads through the Old Town to buildings and places associated with the Borja family. This lets you explore the town center not just as a collection of individual buildings, but also through a shared historical theme. Art and archaeology in two museums
Museo de Bellas Artes de Xà tiva holds one of the most important public painting collections in the Comunitat Valenciana. Artists represented include Ribera, Goya, Vicente López, Santiago Rusiñol, Benlliure and Antoni Miró. Temporary exhibitions are held regularly alongside the permanent exhibition. Museo del AlmodĂ is housed in a former grain exchange built in the mid-16th century. The museum focuses on archaeology and includes Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim objects. Cova Negra: Nature and prehistory
Near XĂ tiva lies Cova Negra, a 57-hectare municipal natural area of ecological and cultural-historical value. Riverside and mountain vegetation shape the landscape. The trails offer opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. Since trail conditions may change, it is a good idea to check them locally.
Cova Negra is also an archaeological site and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. It contributes to our understanding of European prehistory and Neanderthal life. Getting there and choosing when to visit
Xà tiva’s ADIF railway station is within the town, on Avenida Ausiàs March, about ten minutes from the historic center. RENFE commuter line C-2 connects València Nord, Xà tiva and Moixent. Check current schedules and connections for your trip, as rail services may change.
