Benifairó de les Valls can be explored through its architectural history and festival traditions, as well as on walks through the town, with its rural character, and its Mediterranean surroundings. When planning your trip, the main question is whether you would like to focus on cultural history or enjoy the outdoors at a leisurely pace.
Architectural history and cultural sites
The parish church of Sant Gil Abad was built towards the end of the 18th century in the Baroque style, with Aragonese influences. Its architecture is defined by three naves, a transept and a frescoed dome. The naves divide the interior; the transept runs across them, while the dome is decorated with frescoes.
The Palau Senyorial Joan Vives de Canyamàs was built at the beginning of the 17th century on the orders of Joan Vives de Canyamàs. It was designed by the Italian architect Andrea Lurago. The upper section of the northeast tower and part of the north wing, including its garden-facing façade, no longer survive. The building’s construction period and the available information about its state of preservation can therefore be considered together.
The history of the painter Alonso Sánchez Coello is also rooted here: he was born in Benifairó de les Valls in 1531 and became a court painter to the kings of Spain. His restored birthplace is in the old town, retains its original structure and has been open as a public cultural space since 2009. The building thus connects a specific place in the town’s history with a cultural use that continues to this day.
The Casa Guarner cultural centre hosts exhibitions, concerts, competitions and other events throughout the year. Alongside its historic buildings, the town also offers a year-round cultural programme as part of local life. Which events are relevant to your stay depends on when you travel and the dates of the events.
The Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Bon Succés is a single-nave religious building in the Valencian Baroque style, situated on a small hill near the town. It may have been built in the 17th or 18th century and can be reached by climbing 189 steps. The uncertainty surrounding its date remains part of its architectural history; the number of steps is a practical consideration when planning the ascent.
Festival traditions and community history
Every year, around the first Sunday in September, Benifairó de les Valls celebrates its patron saint festival in honour of the Mare de Déu del Bon Succés and Sant Gil Abad. The festivities include the Baixada from the hermitage to the church, followed by the Pujada in the opposite direction. Traditional dances, dolçaines, tabalets and fireworks accompany the celebrations. If you plan to visit the town at this time, you can take the festival dates into account when planning your trip.
El Llavaner, the historic public washhouse, recalls communal work and the social and cultural life of Benifairó de les Valls in times gone by. It complements the monuments with a glimpse into everyday community life: the town’s history is shaped not only by grand and religious buildings, but also by a public place where people worked together.
Walks and regional cuisine
Benifairó de les Valls retains its rural character, with low-rise houses and quiet streets. The surrounding Mediterranean landscape, shaped by agriculture, is suited to leisurely walks. One route starts at the car park of Escola Infantil del Tabalet at the entrance to the town; check the signs locally. This suggested starting point offers a practical basis for planning, without assuming a particular walking time.
Traditional cuisine is also part of getting to know the area. Dishes include paella, stews with lamb, pork and vegetables, oven-baked rice, and savoury cocas with onions and peppers. Sweets include sweet potato cakes and “carats”, or doughnuts. “Caldera de ayuno”, a meat-free casserole, is also mentioned. The range extends from hearty dishes to sweet specialities, offering another insight into the town’s culinary traditions.
