Palanques brings together several distinct travel interests: Baroque architectural history alongside older Gothic traces, Neolithic rock paintings, recurring festivals and the Bergantes River as a natural highlight. The main attractions do not all fall in the same season; January, the spring pilgrimages, August and October each have their own place in the festival calendar. You can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on cultural history, rock art, a festival or the river landscape.

Church and Historical Traces

The “Parish Church of the Assumption” is a Baroque church dating from the 18th century. It contains the remains of a small Gothic portal from the former parish church, which dates back to the 14th century. The building thus brings together the Baroque church and an older Gothic element.

Roca TallĂ  is located in the western part of the municipality of Palanques. It is an archaeological site and a historical testament to the ancient Roman route between AragĂłn and Valencia in both directions. A rectangular watchtower once stood on the upper Cingle. It was used to monitor the area and the routes.

Rock Art at Cingle de Palanques

Cingle de Palanques comprises two rock shelters with naturalistic rock paintings and hunting scenes. The paintings date from the Neolithic period and are more than 5,000 years old. Access to the rock shelters starts in the town centre and is considered an easy walk. Check the current access regulations before visiting.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The annual celebration of Sant Antoni takes place in Palanques in January. It includes the building and nighttime burning of a Barraca, accompanied by the Diablera. During the festival, “les coquetes”, the traditional festive pastries for the occasion, are prepared.

The annual patron saint festivals in August honour Sant Cosme and Sant Damià. The recurring spring pilgrimages include a pilgrimage to the Sant Bernabé hermitage on the Saturday after 11 June. At the annual celebration in October, the Bureo and the Ball del Rotlle bring residents and visitors together for a traditional dance from Palanques; the music is provided by participating Rondallas. If you want to travel for a particular tradition, check the specific dates in advance.

The Bergantes and Local Routes

From Mirador del Riu Bergantes, you can see part of the Bergantes River valley. The banks of the Bergantes in Palanques are rich in biodiversity, and the river is home to the most significant otter population in the Valencian region. At the viewpoint, the focus is on the valley; along the river, biodiversity and the otter population are the defining natural highlights.

An outdoor recreation area includes two springs, washhouses and a picnic area. Palanques is also the reference municipality for the PR-CV 245 Roca TallĂ  hiking trail. Signposting and maintenance may have changed since the quality check; check the latest trail information before setting out. Ruta 99 can be experienced with the family, by motorbike, by bicycle or on foot.
