Figueroles offers different perspectives on its landscape and local history: the Ruta Natural de l'Aigua runs alongside the Río Llucena riverbed through the municipality, while the PR-CV 341 Ruta Etnográfica del Alcalatén starts in Figueroles. There is also Renaissance architecture, older wooden altarpieces and a Calvario with fourteen ceramic chapels. You can therefore choose what to focus on during your stay: waterscapes, walking trails or architectural heritage.
Waterscapes and walking trails
The Ruta Natural de l'Aigua de Figueroles runs alongside the Río Llucena riverbed through the municipality. Along it are irrigation channels, weirs, waterwheels, orchards, ponds, wells, grain mills, brickworks, springs and bridges. This brings water infrastructure, gardens and a range of architectural features together under one route theme. Channels, weirs and waterwheels draw attention to how water is managed; ponds and springs add to the picture, while mills, brickworks and bridges introduce further types of structure. The route can thus be explored through water and the visible traces of human intervention.
Vegetation also features specifically in the description of the route: prominent groups of trees include black poplars (Populus nigra), nettle trees (Celtis australis) and oaks (Quercus faginia). These species add a distinct natural aspect to the connection with water. If you would like to focus on the landscape and plant life, the Ruta Natural de l'Aigua offers a clear thematic framework.
The PR-CV 341 Ruta Etnográfica del Alcalatén, which starts in Figueroles, offers a different perspective on the routes. It takes walkers through places of interest from an ethnological and historical point of view. Compared with the Ruta Natural de l'Aigua, the focus shifts: there, the riverbed, water infrastructure and groups of trees come to the fore; here, it is the ethnological and historical qualities of the places along the way. This distinction can help you choose between a walking theme focused more on the landscape and one shaped by cultural history.
Architectural history and the old town
The Casa dels Colegials in Figueroles dates from the 17th century. The parish church of Sant Mateu also dates to this period: it was built in the Renaissance style between 1640 and 1651. Inside are wooden altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. At Sant Mateu, you can therefore see both the church's Renaissance architecture and its furnishings, with works from two centuries.
The parish church can be visited during Mass times, so plan an interior visit accordingly. This condition is especially useful to know if you want to see more than the exterior architecture of Sant Mateu.
Figueroles' Calvario comprises fourteen ceramic chapels depicting the corresponding Stations of the Cross. The Calvario chapel is a small building with a square floor plan, smooth white walls and a pyramidal roof. Here, you can take in two different aspects: the ceramic depictions of the Stations of the Cross and the simply described, clearly defined form of the chapel building. Together with the wooden altarpieces in Sant Mateu, they also offer a specific comparison between religious art in ceramic and wood.
An interesting walk takes you through Figueroles' old town centre. This brings the historic centre itself into focus alongside individual buildings. If you do not want to plan your visit solely around the church, Casa dels Colegials or Calvario, the walk offers another way to explore the town. The routes and buildings offer a range of focuses: from river landscapes and groups of trees to ethnological and historical walking themes, architecture, visual art and the old town centre.
