A sanctuary built into a natural rock overhang, a town center with steep streets, and the landscape along the Bergantes River reveal different sides of Zorita Del Maestrazgo. Its cultural highlights range from distinctive architectural forms to a recurring September tradition; outdoors, a circular route and the river and gorge landscapes take center stage.
Cultural history in the rock
The Santuario de la Mare de Déu de la Balma is built into a natural rock overhang. The rock is therefore part of the structure and defines the character of this sanctuary. Inside is a room called the Sala de las Danzas. Outside the Santuario de la Balma stands the Cruz Cubierta; its dome houses frescoes by Cruella. These named features give the complex a distinctive architectural character.
The celebrations in honor of the Virgen de la Balma are also part of the town’s cultural identity. They take place in September and include various processions and dances. The dances depict a struggle between a demon and an angel. In this way, the sanctuary’s architecture and a recurring tradition of processions and theatrical performances stand side by side.
Churches and townscape
Construction of the Iglesia Parroquial began in 1772 and was completed in 1800. It has three naves, a transept and a domed vault. The Ermita de Sant Marc adds a 16th-century building to the area’s religious architectural history. It stands on the mountain of the same name at an elevation of more than 1,000 meters.
In the town center, irregular, steep streets shape the townscape. They are accompanied by substantial stone houses with wooden eaves and balconies. The town center can therefore be described through more than individual religious buildings: the street layout, stone walls and wooden details on the houses are also part of its character. Those interested in architecture will find a range of forms, from the church’s domed vault to the balconies and eaves of the homes.
Routes and access
The Els Ports - Zorita del Maestrazgo route is 11.39 kilometers long and forms a loop. It starts and ends at the church and is designated for hiking, cycle touring and mountain biking (BTT). Mountain biking activities in Zorita Del Maestrazgo can also be planned through BTT Els Ports. This provides two different points of reference: a loop route with a specified distance and a dedicated framework for planning mountain biking activities.
An alternative route to the Santuario leads from Zorita Del Maestrazgo via the CV-14, across the bridge and then on to the sanctuary. Check road conditions before setting out. For planning purposes, this access route is a practical consideration distinct from choosing a designated hiking or cycling route.
The Bergantes, gorge and springs
A riverside route along the Bergantes passes through the river gorge. Several pools along the Bergantes are suitable for swimming; conditions may vary seasonally. The Fonts Calentes are thermal and healing springs along the Bergantes, whose temperature remains constant throughout the year. Different natural features thus meet along the same river: a route through the gorge, swimming pools and springs with a constant temperature.
The Estrecho del Barranco del Pardo is a deep gorge, accessed via hiking trails. The Buenos Mozos area is known for its giant pine trees. Alongside the features of the Bergantes, these places provide a distinct landscape focus in addition to the churches and architecture of the town center. Each has its own points of interest: a gorge here, an area known for its pine trees there, and, along the Bergantes, a river route, pools and springs.
A local flavor
Coquetes, filled with candied pumpkin, are associated with San Antonio. This local tradition adds a culinary dimension to the architecture and landscape. To explore the town, you can choose according to your interests: the churches and sanctuary, the streets and stone houses of the town center, a designated loop route, or the river and gorge landscape.
