In Xaló, historic trails lead to fountains and through narrow streets; museums, a botanical park and local festivals complete the picture of the town. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: architecture and local history, nature and cultural landscapes, or wine and regional traditions.

Local history on trails and in museums

The Bassa de Sapena o dels Arcs is an 18th-century water basin. Arches and columns that once supported its roof cross the basin. It is near the town centre and can be reached on foot. Directional and information signs indicate two access routes; admission is free. Check local conditions before your visit.

The Ruta dels Pous leads to four historic fountains. They supplied Xaló with water before a drinking water supply was introduced. The Ruta del Xaló històric offers a different view of the town: it passes through Ràfol de Xaló, the oldest part of town, with narrow, winding streets dating back to the Mudéjar period. The Ruta dels Martorells takes in Plaça de Xaló, La Senyoria, Alqueria de Benibrai, Pas Estret and Muntanya del Benibrai, now known as Devesa. Each trail offers a different focus, from the former water supply to historic sites and the old town layout.

At the Museu Etnològic i Arqueològic de Xaló, objects illustrate local traditions and ways of life throughout history. Three rooms are devoted to prehistory, archaeological heritage and local ethnology. The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María also tells the story of the town: it was built in the neoclassical style between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the church has three naves and an octagonal bell tower. The main altar features an image of the “Virgen Pobre”, the patron saint of Xaló. The historic quarter also contains ceramic devotional panels dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Landscape and wine traditions

At Parque Botánico El Tossalet, visitors can discover the native flora of Vall de Pop and enjoy walking trails. The park also serves as a traditional Stations of the Cross route. One trail there passes a lime kiln and numerous fountains, which are considered structures of cultural value. This brings botanical and historical themes together in one place, though they need not be the main focus for the same visitor.

Another stop for wine enthusiasts is Museu del vi Masserof, an active wine museum housed in an 11th-century finca. Organic wine is produced there using traditional methods, and the museum is open to visitors. As visit arrangements may change, ask about current options in advance. Ermita de Santo Domingo is also open to visitors on Saturday mornings or by appointment. Check the visiting arrangements in advance if you are planning your stay around a visit.

Xaló is one of the municipalities participating in the Ruta dels Riuraus. In Marina Alta, this route explores the historical heritage of Muscat grapes and riuraus on walking and cycling trails. This regional context adds a theme beyond individual buildings to the local trails.

Festivals and regional products

The Festa en honor a la Mare de Déu Pobra is celebrated on the third Monday in October. Traditions include “les danses” dances from Xaló and the distribution of “pambenet”, a local pastry speciality. Festa del Romer takes place every year on the last Saturday in April. It includes a pilgrimage to Hondo de la Solana, where rosemary is gathered, and traditional “bollos” — pastries filled with peas. Check festival dates before you travel.

Xalónia has been held annually since 2012 on the first weekend of the year; the exact dates may vary. The fair showcases local crafts and brings together the Fira del vi i de l’embotit tradicional, the Fira del comerç i artesanal, the Festival de música i Cultura popular and the Fira solidària. The programme also includes local products and food, a craft exhibition and performances in the historic centre. As the programme may change, it is worth checking the latest festival information. The Fiestas en Honor a Sant Doménec take place at Ermita de Sant Doménec and in Plaza Mayor.

The market also focuses on organic farming and traditional regional products, including tomatoes, lettuce, eggs, organic wine and mistela. This range of themes can help you decide whether to focus your trip to Xaló on local history, landscape, wine or local festivals.
