A valley surrounded by mountains, castle ruins overlooking the town and two Ruta del Pantano options of different lengths give Relleu a distinctive character shaped by both landscape and history. When planning your visit, you can focus on different aspects: the townscape and buildings, walking routes, summer bathing pools or local festival days.
Landscape and local history
Relleu lies in a valley surrounded by mountains. The surrounding peaks include Cabeçó d’Or at 1,207 metres, Sierra de la Grana at 1,112 metres and Sierra del Aguilar at 889 metres. The historic townscape is characterised by narrow streets, stone houses and steep slopes.
Castillo de Relleu stands in ruins on the hill above the town. Parts of several towers and numerous sections of wall remain; the castle is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. Iglesia Parroquial de San Jaime also links architectural history with religious tradition: it was built in the 17th century on a former cemetery and has a main nave and the chapel of Mare de Déu del Miracle. Its bells are considered the oldest in the entire province of Alicante.
The Museo Etnológico-Histórico de Relleu displays donated objects, archaeological remains, centuries-old documents and historic photographs. Together with the castle and church, the museum offers another way to explore local history, this time through collection items and visual material.
Dam, trails and water
Pantano de Relleu lies on the southeastern edge of the municipality, immediately before the area of Orxeta, and collects water from the Amadorio River. Its arch dam, built in the 18th century, is 30 metres high and 10 metres thick. It was a prototype of the arch-vault type, combining a striking architectural form with the history of water engineering.
The Ruta del Pantano de Relleu has a 10-kilometre circular option, estimated to take three hours, and a 3.6-kilometre one-way option, estimated to take about an hour. The options differ in distance, route format and time required. Part of the route follows the restored old mule track Camí de les Ripalmes, also known as del Fasamais, and passes a lime kiln, old irrigation ponds, weirs and irrigation channels.
The Pasarela de la presa de Relleu is an approximately 850-metre round trip starting at the wooden hut where tickets are sold. Other outdoor activities in Relleu include the Figueret via ferrata, canyoning and organised mountain bike routes; check their availability locally. Los Tolls are small pools where you can swim in summer. Check water conditions and access locally.
Ermita de Sant Albert is accessible via the fully restored Via Crucis, or Stations of the Cross, and offers views across the municipality. The municipality offers guided tours on the trails for groups of 5 to 50 people and also organises workshops for schoolchildren. Confirm the guided tour arrangements before booking.
Festivals and cuisine
Several annual festivals take place on fixed calendar dates. On 24 December, children walk through Relleu carrying esparto-grass torches known as “aixames” during the Rodà de les “Aixames”, sing Christmas carols and roll the burning torches along Plaza Mayor. Sant Antoni del Porquet, a festival of provincial tourist interest, is celebrated on the weekend closest to Sant Antoni’s feast day; its programme brings together tradition, culture, music and gastronomy.
The youth festival in honour of Sant Albert takes place on the first weekend of August. The pilgrimage to Ermita de Sant Albert is accompanied by a sardine meal, paella, piñatas, a fancy-dress parade, an orchestra and “la banyà”. La Mare de Deu d’Abril is celebrated each year around 11 April with an offering, a Mass and a procession in honour of the Virgen del Milagro; the procession ends at the Virgin’s chapel. If your trip is timed around a festival, confirm the dates for your visit.
Traditional dishes from Relleu include les fasseures, olleta, pericana, rice dishes and cocas. Traditional olive oil production is also still carried on; if you are looking for a specific producer, confirm their current status. The Oleo Tour Señorios de Relleu includes a visit to centuries-old olive groves and Masia El Teuladi, with its 1918 oil mill, as well as an olive oil tasting and food pairing. Confirm booking details and availability in advance.
