San Fulgencio offers a combination of Iberian archaeology, an archaeological museum and a Huerta landscape shaped by agriculture. These themes offer different ways to plan your stay: archaeological sites and museum collections introduce the region’s early history, Las Veredas offers a cycling loop with a stated distance, and restaurants or bars provide an opportunity to sample traditional dishes.

Iberian Archaeological Sites and Museum Finds

The La Escuera archaeological site lies within the municipality of San Fulgencio in the province of Alicante, on a slope of the Barranco de Las Cueras. It belongs to the fully developed Iberian period and dates from the late 5th to the 2nd century BC. In the 1960s, Solveig Nordström excavated a building there that was interpreted as an Iberian temple. The date describes the site’s long period of use, while the temple interpretation refers to the excavated building.

El Oral was inhabited between the 6th and 5th centuries BC and took part in trade networks in the southern part of what is now the province of Alicante. Etruscan products and objects directly associated with wine were also received there. In addition to the period of settlement, these details offer insight into goods and trading connections. La Escuera and El Oral therefore represent different chronological periods and archaeological themes.

The Museo ArqueolĂłgico Municipal de San Fulgencio displays finds from La Escuera, El Oral and the El Molar necropolis. The finds date from between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. The museum thus brings together several named archaeological contexts rather than focusing on just one site. It also has an educational room for school groups.

Huertas, Nature and Local History

San Fulgencio is surrounded by agricultural huertas. Protected bird and plant species that are unique to the region can be found around Hondico de Amorós. The agricultural landscape and the protected species around Hondico offer different points of interest if you are curious about the area’s rural character.

The 18th-century Iglesia Parroquial de San Fulgencio is also part of the town’s history. It provides another point of reference alongside the much older Iberian archaeological sites. For a culinary break, visitors can sample traditional dishes from San Fulgencio at the town’s restaurants and bars. Culture, landscape and local cuisine offer different ways to shape your stay, without requiring a set itinerary.

Cycling the Las Veredas Route

The “Las Veredas” cycling loop passes through San Fulgencio. It is described as an easy route, 26 kilometres long, which can be completed in under two hours. The stated distance and duration give you a concrete idea for planning your day; however, route details may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out. The route’s highlighted attractions include Hondico de Amorós in San Fulgencio and the El Oasis natural area. When deciding whether to take a cycling trip, you can therefore consider both the route information and the named natural destinations.
