Ondara combines striking buildings with local history and traditions that remain visible today. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ondara, you can use these cultural themes to plan your trip: architecture from the 17th to the early 20th century, Valencian pilota and the Fira de Novembre. This lets you shape your stay around what interests you about the town.

Architecture from different centuries

The Casa del Mayorazgo is a particular architectural highlight. The protected building was constructed in the first half of the 19th century by the Ferrando family, with neoclassical elements. The Església de Santa Anna displays a different architectural form: its floor plan follows a Latin cross, where the longitudinal and transverse axes meet. The main nave is covered by a barrel vault, and the interior paintings are by Salvador Gil Camarena.

The Plaza de Toros is another of Ondara’s distinctive buildings. It is Neo-Mudéjar and was inaugurated in 1901. The Convento de Mínimos, meanwhile, dates from the first half of the 17th century and has a central cloister. Visitors interested in architectural styles will find a range of examples here, from the cloister and neoclassical building to the Neo-Mudéjar bullring. The dates also place these sites in different historical periods.

Local history and Valencian tradition

The Torre del Rellotge links a historic building with local history: it is the only surviving tower of Ondara’s former Muslim castle and has been set up as a museum and an interpretive space about the town’s history. The Llavador, a washhouse inaugurated in 1950, permanently displays photographs and posters about its past. The washhouse used running water from an irrigation system fed by a weir. This connection between the building and water use adds to the picture of the irrigation systems developed in Ondara during Muslim rule and still in use today.

Several forms of Valencian pilota can be played at Ondara’s Trinquet: escala i corda, raspall, pilota grossa and rebotet. Their names illustrate the variety of traditional forms of the game, rather than reducing them to a single version. For travellers interested in regional culture, pilota is a distinct attraction alongside architectural and local history.

Fira de Novembre and getting your bearings

Ondara’s Fira de Novembre is a traditional popular festival with a history dating back to 1690. It takes place in November; a medieval fair is also held on the first festival weekend. On the festival weekends, the Prado also hosts a food fair, whose programme may vary. If you’d like to plan your trip around the Fira, check the specific festival dates and programme in advance.

For information about local sights, the “Coneix Ondara” project offers information and audio guides accessible via QR codes at twelve locations. The audio guides are available in Valencian, Spanish, English and German. As visitor services can change, it’s a good idea to check the available information before your visit.

The Ruta dels riuraus d’Ondara also brings together a variety of impressions: it follows rural paths and passes through the town. The riuraus along the route are privately owned. View them from the path and do not enter private property.
