Beniarbeig combines a layered local history with a variety of routes: in the historic center, a medieval street layout shapes the area along the Girona River; for outings, a historic route and several hiking options take center stage. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh up architecture and local history, time on the trails, and the seasonal festival dates.
Churches and Local History
The Església de Sant Joan Baptista is a Baroque parish church built toward the end of the 18th century. The parish has three bells, including the Sant Joan Baptista, cast in 1741. There is also a specific work of art inside: a Pietà , or sculpture of the reclining Christ, created in 1773 by Valencian sculptor José Esteve i Bonet.
In the historic center, medieval streets lead to the Girona River, which shapes Beniarbeig’s urban layout. Part of the old bridge has been preserved as a historic monument in the river park. The Ruta Històrica begins at Plaça 9 d’Octubre, where the current town hall and municipal library are located. Along the way, it passes the Sant Joan Baptista church, Pont Vell, Cava d’aigua and the Benihomer mill. The route thus links several buildings and sites associated with local history in a tour through local heritage.
Other buildings tell the story of different periods: the former town hall was built in 1925, restored in 2005 and subsequently converted into the Centre Social. The Escoles Velles were built in 1931 with financial support from the Santonja family. The former boys’ school wing continues to serve as a meeting place for the Beniarbeig wind band. The Casa Santonja estate comprises a group of Neo-Gothic buildings dating from between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The Ermita de la Casa Santonja includes a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
Archaeology and Routes Through the Landscape
Cova Bolumini offers a glimpse into a much earlier period: it was used as a dwelling and as a burial site during the Early Bronze Age. Rock art has also been documented there, including several painted lines on a natural pillar. A seasonal light phenomenon enters the cave shortly after daybreak around the summer solstice and in the days before and after it. The period therefore spans more than a single date.
The routes described offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors. The SL-CV 158 Dels Racons circular hike runs through the municipality’s agricultural surroundings and near the Gegant de Pedra, also called Gegant Adormit, at the Serra de Segà ria. The Via Segura del Baix Girona starts at Beniarbeig’s sports center, passes through Ondara and El Verger, and continues to Els Poblets; it is 4.5 kilometers long. It is described as a route for pedestrians and cyclists; check its conditions before your trip. Walks along the trails around Beniarbeig also reveal preserved water-management structures: basins, mills, irrigation channels, waterwheels and weirs.
The two routes have different focuses: Dels Racons is a circular hike through the agricultural surroundings, while the Via Segura is described in terms of its starting point, length and route through several municipalities. When planning, you can therefore focus on a loop or a connection between places without treating the routes as equivalent.
Festivals Throughout the Year and Finding Accommodation
Festival dates are spread throughout the year. The Festes de Sant Domènec are held regularly on the first weekend of August, and the Festes de Sant Roc in the last week of August. The Festa de Sant Antoni is regularly celebrated on January 26. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific event dates for your travel dates.
If you are looking for a hotel in Beniarbeig, its different attractions can help you plan your trip: churches and historic buildings are well suited to a culture-focused stay, while the routes put time outdoors at the center of the experience. Cova Bolumini adds archaeology and a seasonal natural phenomenon to these themes. Compare specific offers for your travel dates; for the Via Segura, you should also check route conditions before your trip.
