El Fondó De Les Neus combines a 32-kilometre cycling route with a cultural landscape of vineyards, almond groves and olive groves. Shepherds’ huts, the Plaza de la Villa and a festival calendar with events at different times of year add to its rural character. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on the landscape, architectural heritage or a specific festival date.

Cycling route through the valley and hills

The PR-CV 280 cycling route is of low difficulty and takes a total of 7 hours and 30 minutes. It passes through a large part of the municipality of Hondón de las Nieves and a broad valley with gentle hills. Vineyards, almond groves and olive groves lie in a landscape surrounded by high mountains. The stated total time can be planned as a substantial day’s activity. Check local trail conditions before setting off.

Shepherds’ huts and the town centre

There are 18 shepherds’ huts in the municipality, in varying states of preservation. They are dry-stone structures built without mortar; their roofs are usually constructed using the corbelled dome technique. This building style offers a concrete point of interest if you are interested in local architectural heritage: the key features are the mortarless masonry and the usually domed roofs.

The town hall building stands on the Plaza de la Villa. Its clock tower is considered of tourist interest, providing another architectural landmark alongside the huts throughout the municipality.

Fiestas and cultural events

The fiestas in honour of the Virgen de las Nieves take place in Hondón de las Nieves every odd-numbered year from 1 to 5 August; 5 August is the main day. The Fiestas de Moriscos y Cristianos take place at a different time, in the first half of July, and include, among other things, parades, street processions, tastings and a mascletà.

The Fiesta de San Isidro Labrador also takes place within a specific calendar window. On the weekend around 15 May, a pilgrimage goes from the Ermita de San Isidro to the church and back. Sunday’s programme includes poetry readings and a tasting of typical products.

The Jornadas Culturales include gachamiga competitions, book fairs, medieval markets, walking excursions and painting exhibitions. Dates may vary from year to year, so if this is the focus of your trip, it is worth checking the details of the particular edition.

The Último Jueves takes place on the last Thursday before Lent. In the past, residents would go out into the countryside to eat, among other things, roast rabbit, tortilla and torrijas. Folk songs from this tradition have been preserved. The former food custom and the songs passed down give this tradition a different seasonal context from the festival programmes described above.

Agriculture and gastronomy

In Hondón de las Nieves, 1,200 hectares of irrigated land are used to grow fruit trees and table grapes. The table grapes have the protected designation of origin “Uva de Mesa Embolsada Vinalopó”. The local cuisine also includes arroz con conejo y caracoles, rice with rabbit and snails. Agriculture and cuisine thus add two further concrete aspects of the town to its landscape and architectural heritage.

If you do not have a particular event in mind, you can choose what to focus on based on whether you are more interested in the cycling route, the architectural styles, or the agricultural and culinary side of the town.
