Bolulla can be explored through a wide range of themes: the Ruta del Agua leads to a waterfall and an old mill, while other paths tell the story of former connections and the transport of goods. There is also regional cuisine featuring hearty dishes and sweet treats, as well as festivals with their own dates. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights: the easy water route and the demanding climb at Barranc del Negre are not the same kind of outing.

The Ruta del Agua: Water, Spring, and Old Mill

The Ruta del Agua de Bolulla starts at Plaza del Ayuntamiento. From there, a dirt track descends to the Bolulla River. The linear route is easy and measures 1.5 kilometres each way; the estimated time is 30 to 40 minutes. Along the way, narrow walkways and small bridges lead to a waterfall with a clear natural pool known as a water reservoir.

The route passes Font dels Xorros, also known as Font de la Renyinyosa. This historically significant spring is part of the water story, as is the route’s destination: Bolulla’s old mill, now in ruins. It recalls the former importance of water to the valley’s agricultural economy. In this way, the route combines natural features with the history of water use. As local conditions can change, check the state of the route before your visit.

Paths with Different Levels of Difficulty and Histories

The El barranc del Negre route starts in Bolulla and runs through the Serra de L’Aixorta via Morro Blanc. After a long ascent on a path, it continues with the demanding climb through Barranc del Negre to Peña Alta, also known as Cima L’Aixorta. This makes it quite different from the Ruta del Agua, which is described as easy: here, the demanding climb is explicitly part of the route.

Another path-related highlight is the Camí Vell de Bolulla a Tàrbena. This old mule track has paved sections, particularly at “Ses Voltes,” where it follows a zigzag route. Historically, the path was used to transport goods. Its paving and distinctive bends give it a different character from the two routes whose descriptions focus mainly on water and climbing, respectively.

History, Cuisine, and Festival Dates

Bolulla began as a Muslim alquería, located in Vall de Garx in a 15th-century document. The town’s church also offers a specific historical reference: it was built in 1732, extended in 1822, and designed in the Baroque style. These dates can be combined with a visit to the paths and regional cuisine as part of a stay.

Traditional sweets from Bolulla include coca con almendras, suspiros, monas y toñas, pastissos con boniato, almendrados, and carquiñoles. One hearty local dish is Mintxos: the dough is shaped into balls, flattened into circles, cooked on a griddle, and filled. Examples of fillings include onions and tomatoes, river prawns and tomatoes, anchovies, or sausage. Regional cuisine thus offers both sweet specialities and a variety of savoury fillings.

For a stay connected to the festivals, the dates are a separate planning consideration. The patron saint festivals of San José y Virgen de los Dolores take place on the third Sunday in August and the following Monday and Tuesday. The Fireta de Santa Lucía falls on the second weekend in December. It features local dishes such as puxero de pilotes, bunyols de carabassa, and minxos a la paleta, as well as handicrafts and international products such as English and German sweets. If you are planning your trip around one of the festivals, check the event dates for the year you wish to visit before making plans.

These specific differences can help you choose the focus of your trip: the water route and mill, historic mule track, demanding climb, or a stay timed to coincide with a festival each offer a different experience.
