The Museo del Terremoto is housed in the last surviving rebuilt residence from the period after the 1829 earthquake in Almoradí. Allow about 45 minutes for your visit: visits are only possible by prior reservation, with a maximum of six people per visit. Check the visiting conditions in advance on the museum’s website.

Irrigation heritage and historic sites

The Ruta del Agua takes you through Almoradí’s irrigation heritage and also passes through the town centre. Stops along the route include the old bridge, irrigation channels, drainage ditches and viewpoints over the Huerta. The route offers different perspectives on water management and cultivated land. An important structure in this heritage is the Azud de Alfeitamí, on the lower reaches of the Segura. Its earliest versions date from the late 16th century. The Juzgado Privativo de Aguas del Azud de Alfeitamí manages and distributes irrigation water within its jurisdiction, bringing the organisation of water distribution into focus alongside the structure itself.

In the historic town centre, the parish church of San Andrés is considered the most important surviving architectural monument. Along with the museum house and the Ruta del Agua, it offers visitors interested in history and built heritage several points of interest.

Routes through town and countryside

The three routes have different focuses. The Ruta del Agua passes through the town centre and draws attention to structures and facilities related to irrigation. The Ruta de La Huerta – El Paisaje de Sequeros is an approximately four-kilometre circular route through traditional cultivated land and local wildlife and plant life. The Ruta de Los Mazones follows the historic Colada de los Pastores drovers’ track, passes through Almoradí and takes about two hours to complete.

The two countryside routes offer different guideposts for planning: the Ruta de La Huerta is described in terms of its approximate distance, while the Ruta de Los Mazones is described in terms of its approximate duration. Their themes can also help you choose: cultivated land and local species define one circular route, while the historic drovers’ track defines the other. Choose according to the focus that interests you.

Nature around the Huerta and Segura

The protected natural area of Hoyo Serrano was designated in 1994, covers about 85 hectares and lies 42 percent within the municipality of Almoradí. Aleppo pine shapes the landscape there; the ecosystem is home to amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Its size, protected status and animal groups each offer a different insight into the character of the area.

The Sotos along the Segura River are restored riverside areas that form part of a Green Corridor. Facilities there include picnic areas and play areas for children. Alongside the landscape and nature, there are also practical opportunities to take a break in the green surroundings.

Market, festivities and cultural life

Almoradí’s weekly market takes place on Saturdays, stretches for more than a kilometre and was awarded the designation of a market of provincial tourist interest in 2011. If you are planning to visit the market, Saturday is the relevant day of the week; individual stalls and activities may vary.

The Feria and the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos bring together religious tradition, the identity of the Huerta, a historic fair, music and broad participation by the local community. The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos have been held since 1978; individual programme items vary. The Casino society of Almoradí is also part of the town’s cultural history: founded in 1882, it later became a venue for dances, carnival celebrations, discussion groups and presentations.
