If you want to combine culture and outdoor activities in Lliber, you can choose from a range of different experiences: the EscaldĂ represents the communal processing of raisins; the trails cover themes ranging from religious imagery and architecture to terraces, viewpoints and the river landscape. Their particular focus can help you decide: some trails explore local history, while others reveal traces of agriculture or draw attention to nature along the Gorgos.
Cultural Heritage and Local History
The EscaldĂ is the communal tradition of processing raisins. In 2018, it was recognised as an Asset of Special Cultural Interest within Valencian intangible cultural heritage. The history of the buildings can also be placed in context: construction of the new EsglĂ©sia dels Sants Cosme i DamiĂ de LlĂber began in 1859, and the church was consecrated in 1875.
The riuraus form an ensemble of great architectural and landscape value. The Pous de LlĂber are classified as cultural assets in the BĂ© de RellevĂ ncia Local category. Intangible heritage, religious architecture and a landscape-shaped ensemble thus offer different ways to explore local history.
Trails Through Viewpoints and the Cultural Landscape
The PR-CV 53.5 CamĂ del castell d'Aixa begins at Plaça Major in LlĂber. The Subida al Calvario offers a different experience: this short trail features various scenes from the Passion of Jesus and ends at a viewpoint overlooking the Pla de LlĂber and the municipality. Its combination of religious imagery and views sets it apart from routes whose descriptions focus mainly on traces of agriculture or architectural heritage.
The PR-CV 53.5 CamĂ dels Morterets showcases valuable stonework heritage and old terraces on the hillsides. The Camins de pedra i aigua route passes through former dry-farming areas to the Pla de LlĂber, where wine is still grown and traditional riuraus still stand. These trail descriptions put the cultural landscape centre stage: old terraces and former cultivation areas sit alongside vineyards that remain in use and buildings that have been preserved over time.
The section of the Ruta dels Riuraus XIV in LlĂber is 2.5 kilometres long and easy. The LlĂber. Va de sentits route shares information about LlĂber’s history through several scannable QR codes and engages all five senses. The two routes therefore have different emphases: the Ruta dels Riuraus XIV specifies its length and difficulty, while Va de sentits focuses on interpreting local history.
River Landscape and Font d’Aixa
A large part of the PR-CV 466 Gata de Gorgos–LlĂber runs alongside the Gorgos River. The river is designated as a Site of Community Importance by the European Union. Numerous birds, reptiles and water snakes can be found at permanent pools along the route. The Gorgos therefore shapes a substantial section, but not the entire route.
Font d’Aixa is a narrow valley between mountains that gathers water flowing down from the Sierra del Castillo de Aixa. An old pond bears witness to a time when gardens were irrigated. Along with the terraces and dry-farming areas, the valley reveals another facet of the landscape around Lliber: water and agriculture are among the traces of earlier land use described here.
Local Produce and Cuisine
Locally made products from LlĂber include wine, mistela, raisins, cured meats and traditional pastries. They are available in local shops. The savoury pastries are called bollos and can be filled with onion and tomato, peas or wild herbs.
Another dish is Berenar de Pasqua, a stew made with broad beans, peas, potatoes and onions. An egg is added during cooking for each person sharing the meal. The Fira del Llaurador takes place in the first or second week of January, and the Fira de l’Embotit in the first week of March. As exact dates may vary from year to year, check them before travelling.
