Puerto De Mazarron brings together several distinct themes: Phoenician maritime history, Roman fish processing, as well as a town beach, promenade and sports marina. When planning your trip, you can decide whether archaeological sites, activities by the water or both should shape your stay. A monthly craft market and a cove suitable for beginner diving courses add to this selection.
Phoenician Ships and Roman Heritage
At the Centro de Interpretación “Barco Fenicio de Mazarrón,” an audiovisual presentation, along with graphic materials, models and information panels, tells the story of the Phoenicians in connection with Mazarrón. A reproduction of a ship is also on display there. The Centro covers two Phoenician boats found off Playa de La Isla, described as the oldest boats discovered in the Mediterranean.
The condition of Mazarrón II is quite different: the boat lies beneath the sea off Playa de La Isla and is covered by a metal structure for protection. It is therefore not currently visible. Visitors interested in the finds can learn about them both at the interpretation center and through the distinctive preservation conditions of an underwater discovery.
Roman history here centers on fish processing. The Museo Arqueológico y Factoría Romana de Salazones preserves parts of an important Roman industrial complex used to produce salted fish and fish sauces. The Factoría Romana de Salazones is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Archaeological Zone category. During a cultural visit, visitors learned how the Romans salted and preserved fish and which fish sauces they used, including garum. This makes it possible to understand the heritage not only as an archaeological site, but also through the production that took place there at the time. Another protected monument in the town is the Torre de Santa Isabel.
Beach, Marina and Diving Opportunities
Playa del Puerto de Mazarrón is a town beach with a seafront promenade. There is a bus stop for the Mazarrón–Murcia line right by the beach, and boats can also be rented there. The sports marina is next to the promenade, opposite Mazarrón beach and 200 m from it. The beach, boat rentals and marina are practical points of reference if you want to focus your plans on spending time by the water.
Cala del Faro is suitable for beginner diving courses. In addition, Mazarrón’s 35-kilometer coastline offers numerous secluded coves and impressive diving areas with underwater caves. This lets you distinguish local options at the town beach from the wider range of diving and cove experiences.
A Craft Market on a Regular Schedule
The Mercadillo Artesanal in Puerto de Mazarrón takes place on the third Saturday of every month. In June, July and August, the fourth Saturday is also added as a market day. In those three months, there is therefore an additional market day each month. It is worth checking the published schedule again before you travel.
